Default what is that noise???

A friend of mine with a 01RS has been hearing a noise from the rear end and its getting worse. It sounds like a helicopter slowly starting up and it gets worse when you take curves. It does it any time the car is moving. I think its from pulling the handbrake to catch hairpins(which he has done a number of times), but I dont know jack. So if anyone knows what the problem could be Im sure he'd appreciate the input.
THANKS

I paid about $600 last May. Best price in town, too.

Where else could you find wheel bearings?(our nearest reputable dealer is an hour and a half away)I think its only the rear that needs them.

Bearing, 3 seals and 2-day shipping from Subaruparts.com = $90
Press apart and back together = $25

Disassembly and assembly (with air tools) about 1 hour. Maybe 2 if you get stuck.
