Default Couple ?'s about pirchasing a car out of state!

I live in NC and I am interested in purchasing a car from GA, but have a couple questions.

Does NC require the title to be notarized from GA? Or can the seller and fill out our respective information and be fine?

And secondly, how does one go about getting the car home from GA if i drove down there to get it. In this case, I have no access to a truck and trailer. Is there some sort of temp tag I can get from the DMV in GA?

I dont want to get all the way down there and not be able to get back with the car or get back and something with the title stop me from being able to get the car registered and titled in my name.

Can anyone help me out?

Thanks!

If their state doesn't require a notary and the title is for that state then you don't need a notary. To get it home, put your tag on. If you get pulled over tell the officer the situation and hand them the title and your license. If you buy it during business hours during the week you could try to get a temp tag, but I've never bothered with it.

References: I've bought about 5 or 6 cars from va (no notary needed as they don't use them, and no issues with an nc "ficticious" tag for the trip home).

Problem with that is my tag is on my wrx in Raleigh. Only other tag I have is on my Honda Fit, which I'd be driving to GA and back. I could try to get a temp tag.

Ricky are you still working at Carmax? If so, just grab a dealer plate for the trip.

+1 for the reply above mine.... Or if not, I'm assuming you'd be taking a licnesed passenger with you to drive one of the cars back, so use their tag? Worst case, make one out of cardboard.... I've seen it quite frequently.

Edit, or... Look for a used car lot open at the time of purchase (if theyd be open?) and try to talk them into giving/selling you a 30 day tag (or whatever variation ga may use)

If the buyer would let me use theirs, I would. I'm not sure if he will or not.

I do work at CarMax, but I'm almost positive the dealer plate is not going to happen. Management is funny about dealer plates.

I'm going to check into some kind of temporary tag when I find the time and the DMV is open.

Anyone know about anything specifically related to a out of state title? Does he just fill out the seller info and me the buyer info and bring it to my DMV with that bill of sale? Does it require a notary in GA or here? I've heard that NC doesnt require a notary for out of state title.

You sign it they sign it and you're done... Take the title to the nc DMV and register it as you would a notarized title...

If the ga title (unfamiliar with them) has to be notarized from seller to buyer as ours does then you make the transaction the same as you would here, get it notarized at the time of sale. I know va doesn't use notaries, pretty sure sc doesn't, no clue on ga or anywhere else.

For your tag use NC TAG APPLIED FOR printed on white paper. I have brought 6 cars into nc from out of state and dmv and ncshp both said use that. But have your paper work with you.

As for notary..if they get it notorized it saves you 6 or 7 dollars at the dmv when you get it registered and makes the process a lot smoother.

Dont put a tag registered for another car on that one.

As long as you have something on the back that says Tag Applied For, your title, bill of sale, and proof of insurance is enough. There is a grace period for you to register your car. As already mentioned, make sure you have signatures on the title and bill of sale with mileage and all that.
