Have a Nice Day? First run at the strip....I'm slow :p

Finally made it to the drags last night for the first time. Only got to make 3 runs. I was having major issues getting it into 3rd gear It just didn't want to go when wound tight. On my 3rd (and best, marginally) run I had to completely get out of the throttle and "2-step" it into 3rd and then get back in it. I also had a 160 lb. passenger on the 3rd run. Anyway, my first run ever:

60' = 1.93
1/8 = 9.14 @ 71.86
1/4 = 14.45 @ 94.43

3rd run:

60' = 1.96
1/8 = 9.20 @ 74.33
1/4 = 14.42 @ 95.60

Only mods are my connector tweaks...for what they are worth. I tried hitting 3rd a few times on the way home and what do you know...goes in smooth as silk.

I cut a 1.93, 1.95, and 1.96 60 foots. I started with all 4 @ 40psi (swapped the stock wheels/tires back on). Then dropped the fronts to 35psi. I think I'm still spinning too much (launch at 5k)

Comments/Criticisms/Suggestions?

VV

**Edited for the 1.93 60' I thought was a 1.95.

If it makes ya feel any better, back when I was running stage zero, I only had 1~2 MPH better than your times. Sounds like you have a good running car. 60 foot times are EVERYTHING with AWD. General rule of thumb is 1 tenth reduction in 60 foot equates to 2 tenths at the end of the quarter. Following that, you should be down to a 14.0~14.1 with say a 1.8 60 ft (practice!). Not bad for some "free" mods.

those are great times for a stock car.
you arent going slow at all.
and those 60fts are about the best you can expect at your power level.

Thanks guys. I was surprised I cut a 1.95 my first ever run in the WRX, but I couldn't get beyond that. I have a decent video of my launch I will post if I can get it edited/compressed. Does anyone know how to encode a standard uncompressed mpeg in divx?

OK, here is an unedited/uncompressed (3.6 meg) video of my launch. See if you notice anything wrong/I could change. I held at around 3k, floored it and went around 5k-5.5k:

most cars break trannys after a while if you have as much traction as we do.

its not so much that our trannies are glass.

we just have crazy traction

I got a 1.86 60 ft bone stock, well I have a turboXS blow off valve, from what ive heard that makes you run a little rich, due to the 100% vent to atmosphere...anyone know if it slows you down by any margin???

Would any of the guys with high 1.8s care to comment on technique or tire pressures?

We already discussed that on clubwrx.net (plug! ). For me, building boost and launch from 5-5.5K will get consistant 1.81-1.85 60'. I've also found that it goes down with power. Stock I was in the 1.9's, but with mbc consistant 1.85's, now 1.79-1.85.

That was a great run, i downloaded it.....just wondering if you, or anyone else for that matter, have any tips on the launch.
Are you slipping the clutch out or just letting it drop at 5000. Also what are you shifting at out of first?

I cant get a good launch with out smelling my clutch and its very discouraging (the smell) to say the least.

Thanks for that boost mod it works great

If your smelling clutch your lettting the clutch out to slow. I would suggest you feather the gas up and down between 3-4k. Then right before the light turns green floor the gas and dump the clutch at the same time. You need to get a little wheel spin. If your not getting a little wheel spin that the problem. Practice makes perfect. I have over 100, 5k drop clutch launches 1.78 60' times so don't be afraid to do it. I get no clutch smell at all.

What tire pressure is best guys?

My trip to the local 1/8th mile track yielded a best of 2.4 60'. I was so disappointed in my driving skills on the track. It was like I had too much traction(I know that sounds stupid) and the launch was much more difficult than on the street. Funny thing is my friend with a fully built GSR was faster by 4 tenths on the track but we raced on the street afterwards and I pulled him by 2 cars off the line and had him by a total of 4 cars through 4th gear...I guess I've just gotta practice...

Sounds like you're right on the money. I ran 14.4 completely stock. I now have Stage 0 and went 13.6 a few weeks ago when it was like 100 degrees out. I launch at 5-5,500rpms and slip the clutch out. My best 60foot was a 1.8 with a little hint of clutch in the air.
Good Job,
John

I hold at ~3k, floor it on the 2nd yellow and then dump at ~5-5.5k. It yielded a decent amount of tire spin. I had 40 psi in the rears for all 3 runs, and tried 40psi and 35psi in the fronts...both yielded 1.95 60's. Next time I'm going to go lower. I think the lower I can go and still get enough wheelspin to stay in boost will be perfect, but until I try it I don't know.

I shifted at redline on the 1-2 shift, and attempted to on the 2-3 (I was trying to rush it too much I think). I held 3rd gear through the traps (a little over 7k rpm).

Yeah, perhaps your tire pressure is to high. I keep all my tires around 34-36psi all the time and don't change them for the track (perhaps I should).

Good luck, hopefully next time you'll have the mbc and just jump into solid 13's.

Try adding a little air pressure if you are having trouble breaking them loose. Do you have any mods? Mine may dip under 5k, but it isn't much (if any) and it isn't there for long. When you launch like that you have to be ready to grab second fairly quick. I can only imagine what it is like with the fast cars around here...

VV

I'll try 34 all the way around next time

My first time at the track with my MY00 2.5RS I got a 2.14 60ft time. I thought that was pretty good for a stock RS with a K&N filter.

my 1/4 was 15.718 @ 85.95

at the track that day there was a brand new WRX with a, so the guy said, brand new clutch and lightened flywheel. He couldn't break out of 15's.

I'd say you are doing pretty well
