Default If you buy stuff from the states privately, read on.

I just sent a money order to a guy in the states. And we both just found out today too, that any money drawn from foreign banks/sources, i.e. includes canadian bank drafts and money orders, would be subject to more paperwork, inspection and legitimacy test.

What does this mean to us Vancouver people? Well, if we buy something from somebody privately in the states, if that somebody cashes in your money order, it will take them 2 weeks before they see a cent of what you sent him because the bank will have to verify the sources of the money. Apparently it's a new policy in the U.S. Most likely an outcome of terrorist money activities in the States.

Yey, more hoops to go through

Yeah more paper work but at least you're not getting the rubber glove treatment every time you send money across the border.

No, it shouldn't affect Paypal since they use CC'ds to do transaction.

Next time get a money order in US funds but make sure it can be cashed by a US bank. That is what I did when I sent money to the US. It was hassle free. Speak to your bank and let them know what it is for and they *should* be able to help you. Vancity rocks.

This was newly implemented a couple of months ago. I've sent M.O.'s before from Canada Post and I haven't had this problem.

And no, Bank Drafts are not excempt. It will get cashed. It just takes longer to cash coz they have to check out the source of the money, make sure it's not from some terrorist.
