Post Where is the best place to put a cap?

I was thinking of adding capacitor to my system. I'm running 3 50 watt amps of varying quality. My question, is should I mount the cap before the distribution block or should I mount it just before the amp for the subs? Will the cap benefit the the other amps? I'm a bit thrifty so I don't want to buy a big cap if I don't need to.

It depends if you want to use the cap on all the amps or on just one. If you want to use the cap to charge all the amps (i think you said you had 3??) the you need to put it before the distribution block. Ex.. Power wire from battery to capacitor, then capacitor to distribution block and split the wire to each amp. If you want to charge 1 amp then split the main power wire through a distribution block and place the cap before the amp you want to charge and run the other 2 power wire to the other amps. Also the best place to put a cap is to have the shortest possible wire from the capacitor to the amp. Hope this helps you. I have a cap and it helps a lot. And remember you need to ground the capacitor and the amplifiers and power the amps seperately too in adition the the cap!!

So what you are saying is that ideally you'd want to use 3 smaller caps, one at each amp, rather than one big one for all three. Any ideas on sizing for 50 watt amps?

well.. figure about 1 farad for every 1000 watts.. give or take... you shouldn't need any Cap for only 150 watts, but .25 or .5 are the smallest I have seen...

If i may ask, what makes you think you need a cap for this setup?

Now that I read it they are actually three 100 watt amps. 50 watts per channel. I figured if the lights were dimming when the bass hit it would help the sound. I just wasn't sure if only the amp powering the subs would benefit. Actually I'm just looking to improve my system without having to upgrade big ticket items and i heard that adding a cap can help sharpen things up but don't really know the specifics.

Anyone wanting to know more than you'll ever need to know about caps, read the other cap post in the "Car audio, video and security" thread.
