Have fun. Was VIR your first time tracking a RWD car and how did you like it?

I really like my FRS and with our custom valved suspension, race tires, and track brakes it's a joy to drive. It definitely has much better balance than the STi but even with only 155 whp it can get tail out. It will be a challenge trying to hook up higher power in the quest for a wicked lap time.

Thanks,
Phil Grabow

Phil..... awesome lap time at VIR.

I tracked a rental POS 944 at RA last year for a few sessions and have driven another E30 during one session at VIR a few weekends ago.

I really enjoyed driving the car. Very predictable and fast in the turns. The best aspect of racing the SE30 is that there is always a couple dozen or so other racers with experienced advise, parts, beer, etc.

I really wanted to TT my STI, but I didn't choose my shop wisely. Multiple ring land failures thanks to the dreadful AOS on the oil filler, and two complete long block failures (broken valve in one, pistons hitting the head in the second). :-( I will eventually get it back on track once we find a donor long block. Ken @ KNSBrakes is now helping me keep the E30 and Ninja Forester on track and with the STI. I'm going to leave the motor alone and run a safe stage II setup, something I should have done two years ago. Be ready to re-tune my STI!

I think I might have a plan for you that will work out to get your STi on the track and reliable. If you're not going to have someone like us put your motor together you should source a new OEM short block, send us your heads to fix them (skim, check for bent valves, etc.). That head package even with a stock turbocharger makes impressive power and over rev.

Once you get the dry sump pump fixed from ingesting all that debris you really should use it. We'll talk.

Thanks,
Phil Grabow

Does Track Daze have a group for someone like me? Open passing group or controlled pace lap (bunches up field) so there is some clean track..at least one lap.

Or is this a free for all open session where anyone can pull on track late etc?

TrackDaze might work - especially the Mon/Tuesday event as they don't have huge turnout although I didn't check this one.

No pace lap -pass anywhere w/ a point. I would talk to them though. You probably want them to be aware.

Chin is faster and faster cars although that's a relative term.

Ok thanks it probably won't work out for testing. If I was there just to have fun it would be great to have that much track time.

Testing for 10ths of a second requires some clear track.

You might ask them if you can run in the Instructor Group. Instructor Group is open passing, but you'll still have to deal with traffic.

That would be more fun and a lot safer but I could even deal without open passing if I could control the pace lap giving me at least one hot lap. It gets a little sketchy passing cars when you're running lap times 40 seconds faster than the tail end of the field. It was like a 140 mph slalom course at the UTCC last year as the Daytona Prototype and me passed the tail end of the field before they even got the green flag

Fast forward to 1:50

Skeen is slow...

I'd also talk to Gracie, Levine, and Devinney too as far as car set up and Special E30 handling quirks.

Phil,

I would love to keep the heads. Maybe I should send you pictures of the heads/cams before shipping? They were full of debris and all the cams and cam journals were scored. Even the Cam sprockets were full of debris and scored.

Marty... be careful! Never know if Skeen might be checking out NAS. When you least expect it he might be giving you a "friendly" bump on track.

Paul,
Mike would bump me just for the fun of it. He always knows I am just kidding around.

I use to have a tag line that said
"I passed Mike Skeen...once"

I would love to bring that car since it would run without much traffic but it's in California with Hydra EMS getting the computer developed.

Some of you guys in the Southeast should consider running with Tracks Unlimited. Seem to be a good group with 2 Subaru-driving instructors. They have an event coming up at Atlanta Motorsports Park on 11/17-11/18, too. Hoping to be there.

I;ve instructed with them. Good guys. They actually owe me a free day. I need to check out AMP. Make sure you make the db restriction at AMP though or your weekend will be done early.

SCCA Rant

So I was watching a pretty baddass T1 race at the runoffs between a privateer C5 and a decently funded C6. Great racing for the 4-5 spot btw.

So then I perused the runoff results.

Not a ****ing Subaru to be seen. Really?

Are turbo's and AWD that ****ing complicated that we can't race these cars?

The funny thing is - while the lip service answer is 'i have no idea what my job is' from some SCCA duche -and the higher ups are LAUGHING at us going....'Subaru's are weird and don't make money"...

Yet all the Subaru 'performance' vendors are KILLING it in this ....."down" market.

I bet a TON of you ****ers would race if there was a real class where you could compete.

I don't think it's because they are hard to race or complicated, just not competitive due to classing.

In any class there are the one to three front runner brands and just about everyone runs them. Someone will try something new and it will either work or not. If not then no one else will try. The 350z struggled in T2 for the same reasons.

I think for the Subaru's to be competitive then a few letters to the SCCA board need to be written.

So I was at CMP this past weekend, and bumped into this guy again.

No Subie this time, though. Good times were had by all in attendance.

Check with your local SCCA region. They ought to have one to keep sites' neighbors happy.

I'm betting a good percentage of Subaru owners are throwing "performance" parts at their car just because, and have little if any desire to actually put any upgrades to good use. I've been down that road with many people, not just Subaru owners. With that said, I doubt my STI will see any W2W anytime soon.

I know at least with NASA If you bring a turbo car to the championships expect it to be at total PITA! They just really don't like turbo cars and you will be protested to no end and you will have to travel an hour to get your dynoed, etc.

The trend continues. NASA-SE at CMP in November. 100+ cars and only one Subaru (not mine, I'm doing Comp School in the SpecE30!)

I'm skipping CMP. No other PTB cars are showing Definitely be at Road Atlanta in December. I expect Subie love point-bys

Congrats on comp school. My buddy is doing it as well at CMP. Tell Randy and Darrel that Bob in the Subaru called them maniacs.

I only know of maybe 2-3 people that regularly drive with NASA. My friend in a black NSX should be at CMP next weekend getting his comp license, too, IIRC.
