Default SMY 02-07 gauge bezel impression

FYI - I emailed SMY about this review on 9/27/2012 and no reply or voucher treatment received. 6/5/2013 still no voucher or response at this point. If you offer something up and do not follow through then why offer at all? Perhaps an honest review is not good enough? My opinion already formulated....

Look at what was waiting for me after work today. The SMY 2002-07 bezel is here although UPS was not very kind to the package. I suggest considering upping the cardboard strength on those boxes. The only other thing I am not partial to is shipping boxes with external labels that elude to their contents. This is how stuff up and runs away on it's own legs (same as with NewEgg, Amazon, Best Buy boxes) . I also suggest considering removal of that label or at very least use the shipping label to conceal.

Opening it up reveals a bubble wrapped bezel, two rubber bands, some business cards, and two decals. No instructions, although I tend to feel strongly about physical instructions (good ones) being required with aftermarket parts. I digress. You can partially use the 2008+ instructions on SMY's website. LINK I would guess that SMY will update their website with 2002-07 installation instructions once he gets caught up on shipping these jems out.

Since I am replacing an Autometer bezel with this one I can make comparisons between those two as well as to the OEM bezel.

My first impression is that SMY's bezel feels "stout" like the OEM bezel (Subaru calls it a visor). While this might have no practical effect on function it does feel better than the somewhat "flimsy" Autometer bezel. SMY's surface finish is indistinguishable from OEM. Autometer's bezel was shiny and inconsistent. Both use the upper two phillips screws for mounting. SMY's bezel accepts the OEM dust skirt and lower retention clips. Autometer's bezel does not accept the dust skirt and uses these funky aluminum brackets. **Honestly I never installed the lower aluminum brackets.

My OEM bezel was already removed so these steps are partially out of order.
The retention clips need to be removed from the OEM bezel without destroying them. One would think lifting the tabs on either side would do the trick, but the actual hooks are further up the tabs. A small screwdriver in the very end can pry the clip from the bezel. I am not sure if these clips are available in service parts. Push the clips onto the SMY bezel.

Next the dust skirt needs to be transferred over. Carefully.....I did say carefully pry the two retention washers off the plastic posts. There are no service parts for these so I suggest not losing them. I flung one across the carpet while being less-than-careful and cussed for 10 minutes while I searched. Install these parts on the SMY bezel.

The SMY bezel has walls at the back of the meter openings. I tried my Defi Links and they obviously fit with plenty of room to spare.

I also tried the AEM UEGO I had laying around and it fits even with those threaded mounting studs. I suspect that Autometer and Stack meters using the same mounting studs will also fit well.
**see post #4 kh15 noted that the Autometers will stick out and require trimming down the posts**

Removal of the Autometer (or OEM) bezel is fairly easy. Lower the steering wheel down and use a stubby phillips screwdriver to remove the upper two screws. You will be reusing them so do not loose. Pull out the lower tension clips or remove the lower aluminum brackets. Reinstall the SMY bezel just the same as you would any other. Of course there may be some meter harness routing to accomplish now.

There is still some gap at the lower left corner but I could care less. This fits much better than what I had before and no one is going to see that anyways. A little blurry but you get the idea. It is reduced form the initial gap on the prototype.

Other areas fit great.

The SMY meter openings are certainly larger than the Autometer openings. SMY's online instructions note that this is for cooling of the meters and the rubber bands are meant to take up the slack. I tried the rubber bands although I already knew going in that this wasn't going to be for me. After wasting more time than I hoped, they did not go in as noted. 6-7 wraps of Scotch 33 electrical tape works much better, is adjustable, and is black so you won't see any natural rubber color peeking out.

I also treated myself with a new cluster cover. Oh now that is clean. But am I the only one that notices that the meters seem to very slightly point outwards?????

Thanks Yanev for striving for an excellent product. It was easily worth the wait. If there are any questions feel free to ask. I am extremely picky about stuff like this so the fact that I am happy says quite a lot.

**the photos are not as good as I hoped with this camera but I'm not taking it apart again just to take new ones.

Just replaced my autometer cluster pod as well with the new SMY piece. Totally agree with your review! One note though...my AEM UEGO did NOT fit with the rubber band and I ended up using electrical tape as did JarHarms. I also had to cut the threaded post off my autometer boost gauge since it did not fully seat in the housing and was sticking out about 1/2". And whats up with the janky cut stickers....oh well.

Worth the wait...sure why not! I forgot I even ordered it lol!

Hmm, that Autometer must have a longer body, threaded posts, or both. I just assumed they might be of similar dimensions. Thanks, I will revise my original post.

They "seem" ever so slightly pointed outwards from the driver. I did not notice it at first, I caught it by-chance after the install. I grabbed the two meters and twisted them inwards slightly and it seemed to take care of it. I do want to take a closer look and see if this is actually going on or if my eyesight just sucks. I need to get the meters out and lay a strait edge across the holes to check. Even then I can probably shave the edges a bit to correct.
Even if this is confirmed it is not something I would worry about when buying this bezel. It is an awesome part.

The sym cluster definitely points the gauges outward at a very slight angle. Seems strange at first but i've been driving around with the autometer cluster that tilts the gauges towards the driver. The syms cluster fits so well though i dont even care!

I got mine yesterday. It deff has factory or better finish. And it fits very well. However I have VDO gauges. As have been trying to make the install as clean as possible so I unfortunately had to cut some holes and make some notches in the smy. The VDO I have the illumination prongs sit too far in and contact the back wall of the tube. I guess not many people have VDO so it's probably not gonna be a big problem for people but if anyone does its a bit of a chore. But the pod itself fits really well which I suppose this thread is about...

I'm thinking of going VDO as well, are you running analog or mechanical gauges?

What is the depth of the SMY pod? VDO has the technical drawings on their website so I can figure that out, just don't know the depth of the pods on the cluster.

I think if one was to get creative. You could shave some of the inboard edge down and then you could tilt the meters in a bit more to your liking. I may try that out but just to busy right now.
I do agree that it is still a fine component.

I've been running the syms cluster for about a week now and yea the angle of the gauges is still very odd to me. I would think they should at least point straight. I just make my friends in the passenger seat tell me what my air fuel and boost are at lol!

In all seriousness though, while its a little goofy looking the cluster is beautiful and worth every penny!
