Default another ej20k problem..

Hello I am new to the forum and new to Subarus..

I love my 97 wrx sti wagon. Owned it for a month. I'm the second owner since its been imported to BC. anyways, upon getting the car, i knew the car had some emission problems. Because it failed the aircare before transferring the ownership (what we have to do to sell the cars in BC. ittshay deal) anyway, because it failed the aircare i got some good deal on the car.

See how bad it is?

Long story short.. I suspected that it was the o2 sensor. So i changed it with.. it seemed to have helped the car get few more mileage. but car is still running rich on cruise and lean on boost. Getting lots of backfires.. which is kind of fun..

Here is what i found out.. MAF sensor is still correct.. cleaned it. Oil pump works fine.

Here is what i am going to do:
Timing, spark plugs, coil pack, and clean the injectors..

The symptoms I am getting are the following:
ittshay mileage (less than 300 per tank), Rich on cruise lean on boost. Boost is set at 8 PSI, Small tiny knock from the drivetrain.. which i heard is normal because of the shim over bucket design.. and lastly car idles rough.. I suspect it might be the ittshay engine mount or car misfiring.

Too many problems.. i can't afford to leave the car at a shop for days to find the problem.. cause i need it for my DDing. any suggestion or help is greatly appreciated I'm going to take a vid of engine bay and upload it for you guys. Thanks!

The sound is worse when warmed up.

Giving it some throttle
EDIT: Vid is uploaded.

Is the tapping sound louder on the right side or left of the heads? did you do a compression test?

When I wrecked my EJ20 few years ago it made the very same sound at idle and I could not push boost anymore. Only got worse as it revved up, of course. but it all started between shifts and and would stall out at stops, and did not like to start each time. It was a costly $4000 for the used long block labor and another 1k to upgrade the exhaust clutch and flywheel while everything was off. But when I got it back it was another kind of animal, I was in love with it again. After 4 months of separation, I started to tinker with it and now I have close to 280whp by AP software dyno.

Your problem sounds like engine knock or shaft play on the turbo.

You don't need to do a compression test. Drain the oil and look for metal flakes. I bet it's got a bad bearing.
