Lightbulb RESOLVED: looking for my rattle.

got the car up on jack stands and had it in 1st and 2nd no rattle. Guy helping me is going to bring a stethoscope.

So odd it only rattles under load, in neutral it makes a faint rotating winding down noise.

Still shifts perfectly. No grinding noises, just rattle.

More to come after we listen to it tomorow.

Maybe a heat shield? I had a rattle for a while that only made noise under a load and found that the heat shield where it comes up from the exhaust manifold where it attached to the turbo was missing a bolt. Inserted a bolt and no more rattle.

Are we talking about the same noise you been having? I wouldn't describe it as a rattle. To me it sounded like someone took a metal pipe, filled it with rocks and and rotated it around. Does it not sound the same as before?

I'm just tying to say it is more of a rattle than a grinding noise. It doesn't sound like when you miss shift and it grinds.

I haven't looked at Jr.'s set up in a while but I would think the heat shield went the way of the Doh Doh...

Stopped to get a breaker bar to get the drive shaft off.

Going to see if we can get the back panel off to see if the center diff bearings are bad.

Well we had to stop to get a tool to get he pin out of the shifter linkage knuckle to pull the rear housing off.

But we saw some metal up in there. Pictures once we get it off.

It was a bearing in the back of the houseing. Ball joint bearing cage was destroyed.

Cleaning all parts of shavings and then going to need to order the parts.

I'll look into the part cost of a new housing, thanks for the tip on checking the rear housing area first as well. Saved me the trouble of dropping the tranny and having to line it back up.

Cleaning parts to continue after this post.

Monday I'll try and order the bearing, and a few other items we noticed should be replaced also.

No problem but I would recommend replacing that housing to be safe

Your also gonna want to make sure that the center diff did not get damaged or any metal in it from that blown bearing

All parts cleaned except parts still attached to transmission hanging under car.

All parts oiled again after cleaning shavings out.

Btw, the Center Differential is quite interesting, it looks like a multi disk clutch or something. (We had to open it to get all the shavings out)

Next: Find a good place to order the parts and wait for them to get delivered.

Does anyone have a good place to look up parts? I purchased the Service Manual for 2005 transmissions, but it just shows a number for the diagram, not a part number.

Oddly enough, after buying the service manual, I found a link to it (But it says for 08)

http://downloads.bustedfingermotorsp...20&%20Diff.pdf

EDIT:

Parts I need (or am going to look into getting)
  1. Ball Bearing (with flange) [Part no. 806245030] (item 13 in the linked PDF, item 11 in the 05 service manual) (This is specifically the bearing for the Transfer Drive Gear.)
  2. Extension guide [Part no. 32160AA030] (item 15 in the linked PDF, item 13 in the 05 service manual)
  3. Oil Seal [Part no. 806716070] (item 17 in the linked PDF, item 15 in the 05 service manual)
  4. Oil Seal [Part no. 806735210] (item 18 in the linked PDF, item 16 in the 05 service manual)
  5. Liquid Gasket for Extension Case: THREE BOND 1215 (PART no. 004403007)
  6. **Maybe** Extension Case [Part no. 32130AA271] (Item 16 in the linked PDF, item 14 in the 05 sevice manual)

EDIT2:

Here is another sevice manual, this one is for the 06

http://www.spooledupracing.com/downl...20&%20Diff.pdf

EDIT3:

Added part numbers.

Found a great place to order parts from online.

We'll see if they have a good shipping website tool or if they email me complaining about Alaska shipping. Said $18 for next day air (yeah I think i'm getting an email from them as soon as they realize its Alaska).

Just make sure when you start putting it back together you set up the center diff's spacing correctly after the new bearings go in, if you don't you could potentially cause a bigger issue
