Default snow tires

I drive an 08 wrx (hatch). I use it as my daily driver but like to get aggressive sumtimes. I currently live in newyork but am about to move next door to canada so i figure this season i should get the right tires. i am currently using my stick 18" alloy wheels but plan to but steelys for the winter(probably 16") so this may or may not be relivant. I am trying to figure out wut would be a good snow tire for me. my price range is about $800 (not including the steelys). any help is appreicated. ty.

Anything snow tire will be better than an all season or summer tire. You can try shopping around used if you're into that or buy general altimax artic from tire rack. They seem to be popular (and cheap) though I don't have experience with them. I have some no name wal-mart tires I bought used on this forum. They probably aren't the best tire but it sure as hell beat driving in the snow on summers...ask me how I know
