Need more detail. Where? Back woods? Major city? How frequently do plows come around? Budget? Size? Use - ice racing, going up to the mountains, commuting? Do you want ultimate deep snow and ice traction or good highway manners? Too many variables.

A good amount of highway driving... however I'm also going to deal with a some deeper snow in the back woods. Snowplows come through semi-frequently. But its VT... if you miss one by 30 minutes you could have another 4 inches on the ground....

Any performance winter like the Dunlop WinterSport 3D can handle 4 inches with ease. I've plowed my way through 18 inches of powder with those.

General Arctic Altimax. Well mannered on the highway. Good snow/ice performance. Relatively cheap. If your daily route gets icy, you can stud them. If you want 10% better performance for 40% more money, go with the Nokian Hakkapeliita 7. Also, go with a narrower tire - like 205/50/17.

Lots of people in other parts of the country dig Blizzaks, Michelin XIce, Hankook iPike, etc. Those haven't really caught on in the mountainous areas of VT & NH. I haven't figured out why, but there must be a reason...

Thanks for the responses. I was actually looking at the Blizzaks before I submitted this post. I'll give the Dunlops a look.
