Default 2012 Grand-Am racing thread

Did i miss the thread on this series? I know there was a 24 hour of daytona thread but i don't see anything about the rest of the season. I enjoyed the racing last year, my first time closely watching it, and was hoping others did aswell and would be interested.

I caught the replay of the race at Barber Motorsports Birmingham (which started at around 2:00am i think) and i watched the entire race it was so exciting. Sounded like everyone was struggling for grip.

But it was nice to see someone else (and the gorgeous corvettes) up front in DP even though it sounds like they currently have a big advantage with aero. Will be interesting to see what happens with that.

Here's the clip of John Pew's "crash". A seriously dumb move by the Mazda, i haven't searched to see if he was penalized yet.

And of course a great race in GT. Hopefully Kfoote will join in, who is on crew for Turner Motorsports. I don't know who was driving the last stint, but they totally dropped the ball. Kidding, sounded like he was pushing and the car didn't quite have pace.

Looking forward to the comments/conversation.

The new DP vetts look very sleek. Season will be a fun one to watch.
Check out what happens in the continental race.
My buddy Brett in the black CKS camaro just survived the incident.
The white mustang with yellow stripe slid on grass coming from back of the pack wiping out many cars in its path. Can't wait to watch race on tv in a few days. Continental series always has great action.

You are correct. Auberlen was in the car for the last stint, so it's safe to say it wasn't because the driver was slow. Right now, with the rules package the way it is, the Ferrari is both the fastest car and the easiest on tires, with the Porsches not too far behind. The only reason the Mazda won is because they were just quick enough to be able to stay ahead at the critical points, and due to a somewhat strange call by Grand-Am in the last caution, they effectively ended up a lap up on everyone else for the last green flag run. Both us and the Camaros need a bit more help from the rules.

The CTSCC race is on Sunday at noon ET. Suffice it to say that 70 cars at Barber just doesn't work. Paul Dalla Lana ran the first 50 minutes of the race in the #96 car, and never got a complete green flag lap.

The Mitchum Camaro (the black one that the mustang is hitting in that pic)survived that incident, but it wasn't entirely in tact. It ran most of the race with no driver's side door.

We have A LOT of work to do on the CTSCC cars before Homestead at the end of the month.

Though I normally am the jack man for the #97 car, due to a very unusual set of circumstances, I ended up being the jack man on the 96 car for one of the pit stops that I think was filmed. If you see a Turner Jack guy with a beard during the broadcast, that's me

EDIT: In car video of the first 2 starts from a GS Mustang:

Yeah, very strange call on the Mazda. They weren't a lap up when the caution came out, right? I was looking forward to that race to the checkered.

Great Stuff man. It's awesome to have someone here on a team.

Basically what happened in the Rolex race is that in the last caution, they called a "short caution", meaning it's only 2 laps, everyone can pit on the first lap the pit is open (normally DP only), and there would be no "field split", where the DP cars are allowed to pass the GT cars so they can all line up at the front of the line, or "wave by", where they normally allow all of the GT cars that are ahead of the GT class leader to pass the pace car and go to the tail end of the line. This prevents the situation that happened, where the DP leader had just passed the second place GT car, and when the pace car came out in front of the DP leader, the lead GT car was able to go to the tail of the line because they were ahead of the pace car, where the rest of the GT field was stuck behind the pace car and not allowed to pass.

We're very happy to be associated with both Rum Bum and BGB in the Carreras this season in Conti. Couldn't be much happier with the results other than if Emp could have also put the BGB car on the podium, but they were still in the points. The Camaros and BMWs need to watch out. The Porsches are coming to get you.

I'm friends with Leh so obviously I'm biased but I cheer for Brumos.

Leh Keen and Andrew Davis that drive the number 59 for Brumos are both Subaru owners, both of them have Bugeyes.

Looking forward to an exciting season this year in Grand-Am.

The CJ Wilson mx-5 made a big mistake near the end of the conti race that cost them the race. I do not know what they were doing on that wave by but they had the most dominating car out there.

Bummer on the STI breaking down. It was nice to see them upfront!

^^ LOL. According to Pappa Joe Aquilante it had something to do with the rear diff and or axles......but who knows really, the Speed reporter was talking to him while the car was still on the side of the race track. The speed reporter also asked him about the development of the STI and Joe seemed pretty frustrated with it. Joe has posted here in the motorsports forum before, so he may chime in. It's too bad because Phoenix Performance is the ONLY team running Subaru's, where as there are loads of other teams running Porsche's, Mustangs and BMW's. It seems like the deck is stacked against them.

On the other hand the Aston Martin is a new car and looks to be doing well right off the bat. Then again it is a proper sports car, not a compact sedan on steroids.

Overall I thought the STI looked good, it was really getting out of the corners fast. Faster than any other car I saw. Not bad for a sedan.

There is a reason why no one races Subaru's in the series....

Its hard pressed to make them last.

I was by Freedom today to get some tires mounted, Tom said Barber was more wild this year than he thought it had been in years past.

Your probably right. The STI is just reaching too much to compete in with some pretty big dog's in the GT class. IMO the WRX would make a great ST class car.

I think it has more to do with the budget of Phoenix compared to the bigger teams. Over the years the various Subarus have ran and finished well just not regularly.

Are you on that team?

Didn't see the continental series on the Speed schedule this weekend.

So qualifying was rained out for Rolex and grid positions are based on point standings. Should be a good race.

I hate the new Grand Am website with a passion. There's all this emphasis on Facebook and Twitter and social networking, but a day after the Conti race and 6 hours after the GT race results aren't updated. WTFBBQ. Not to say that I am not happy with the Conti results, but not being able to see them is lame...

Wow, I had heard that Miami was ugly, but Jesus, thats bad. When it was raining that hard at VIR, they held them under caution for what seemed like forever.

Homestead drains a lot better than VIR. When it was raining hard at Homestead, there was a lake in turn 1 that made it undriveable, but in the lighter rain, it drained quickly enough to be passable. At VIR, there are sevearl places where the water puddles and doesn't drain. I'd say that the rain at VIR for that race was about what the lighter rain was at Homestead last weekend.

I unpacked my suitcase that came back in the rig last night. It was quite unpleasant.

Yeah, I remember Christopher talking about T17 at the 13 hours last year. I just saw the lake in T1 in the first few minutes.
