Default Need Tuning Advice

ok so I have an 02 wrx and the only mod on it right now is a catback exhaust and it runs perfectly fine. my question is I just ordered a downpipe and BOV and I was wondering if I need to tune it before adding those mods? also it it is fine with those mods would it be alright to also get a cai?

well it is not necessary to get a tune but it will give a you a CEL because of the downpipe 02 sensor so be prepared for that

and because you are dumping the air to atmosphere instead of recirculating it will cause you to run rich in between shifts so a tune is suggested just not unnecessary

also would it be a bad idea to strap on a cold air intake before the tune?

02 stock tune is fine with a turboback.

The way Subaru does tuning, a BOV will always run rich on shift. Can't be tuned for. You are degrading performance after a shift for a crappy sound.

CAI untuned is okay, but you're MUCH better off skipping the CAI if it means you can run the Cobb tune. However, I'd recommend a custom tune over any off the shelf tune. Find somewhere that will do a tune without needing to buy the AP. Or do an e-tune with a tactrix and a wideband. Price is similar, but you'll get a better overall tune.

CAI on stock turbo is very, very small gain if you're doing other tuning. Most gains from a CAI are some kind of leaning out of fueling. That means it messes with any kind of off the shelf tune. Skip it and get real tuning. night and day difference with a custom tune.

Also if you're paycheck to paycheck on this kind of thing, consider that these old engines are prone to spinning bearings when pushed and the trannys don't hold up to abuse. I've known many people who ended up with an engine or tranny on their credit card and paying it off at 20% interest for a couple years. Keep this in mind before going nuts on mods. Use 0W40 or 5W40 oil and make sure the oil is fully warmed before driving hard.

BOV isn't going to hurt anything on the 02. The rich spike is VERY momentary and at closed throttle, so whatever. Data log, and you'll see. I wouldn't pay for one, but I got mine for free.

for a cold air intake you will need a tune because with your MAF reading incorrectly it will casue you to hit limp mode hitting just over about 5 pounds of boost and depending on what you want to do with the car i suggest a short ram intake so you can run a FMIC but for your setup right no just delete the snorkus and drop in a high flow filter thats what i did for my first build

with a portune fuel map you can compensate for the BOV with costume fuel map but to be honest there not worth the trouble and money

My recommendation...

- Install the downpipe
- Return the BOV
- Leave the stock intake
- Buy a grimmspeed BCS
- Buy a tactrix cable
- Get an etune from a reputable tuner
