Default Local gurus, RHD importing?

Hey guys,

A buddy of mine has found a skyline GTR RHD that is currently imported legally in Michigan. It's his understanding that he can't get it legally registered in MD due to an issue with RHDs being illegal now. Anyone know if there is a way to get it registered.

We just registered an imported Toyota Soarer here in VA in June with not one problem. As long as everything is legit he should be fine. Is it titled as the right car?

If RHDs were illegal, you'd see a lot of Postal Service trucks pulled over getting tickets. That is not the problem.

Problem is NHTSA regulations because JDM car never was tested for crash safety or emissions. Imported legally in Michigan maybe (racing-only exemption), registered legally for the street as what it really is in Michigan, probably not. After it is 25 years old (15 years in Canada), you can. There are loopholes, there are DMV clerks who can be bought or just try to help so much that they override the VIN# check in their system, VIN# swaps,....Still, there are stories out there about such cars being hunted down and seized by Feds. I've taken my share of risk w/ grey market cars and been lucky. RHD sux as a streetcar in N America. Try going thru a drivethru fast food or bank or paytoll by yourself.

My husbands Soarer is titled and registered as a 1993 Toyota Soarer with an American VIN number....it isn't 25 years old and everything is right and legal. He daily drives the Soarer more than the STI lol

I mean you just know not to use a drive thru when your driving the rhd....unless someone is with you. As for tolls we have ezpass....and when he drove the car back from Chicago and he didn't have ezpass yet it didn't matter....he said all the toll people were so interested in the car they all got out and came to him
