Default Why does my car have a strong gas odor after filling up?

In the last couple mnths or so, I've noticed that after I fill my tank up, the interior of my car has a very strong gasoline odor for about 5 minutes. It's so bad that I have to actually open the windows to stand it. After about 5 minutes it's gone and it only happens after I fill up. Anyone know what it could be? It's only started happening in the last couple months or so. Could it be that somehow the gas they use here in Phoenix in the summertime puts off more odors than the gas in the winter? Anyone else with this problem? Thanks

Eric

Default Gas Odor

Do you top off your gas tank? If so, it may overflow and go into some kind of catch can,(carbon element I believe). The gas will sit there until it evaporates, hence the odor. Do you have a warning on the inside of your gas cap door that warns you against topping off. I have a 2001 MY and it advises against it. Just a heads up,
Keith

I never "top off". I let it go until it shuts itself off and then never add more to round off the purchase price or anything.
