Default 2012 owners: how did the first year go?

I saw 2013 Impreza is now posted at Subaru's website: http://www.subaru.com/vehicles/impreza/index.html

What do you all think of this generation (2012+) of Subaru Impreza so far? There don't seem to be a whole lot of complaints: sporadic models with high oil consumption, squeaky driver's seat, and lower than expected fuel economy are pretty much the biggest issues.

I didn't see any indications of reliability problems in the Impreza, which is pretty good. My ancient Forester has had its quirks with the oil consumption and wheel bearings, but it's never broken down on me. If I downsize to an Impreza I'm hoping for the same level of reliability.

My Impreza is only 3 months old with 5k miles on it, but it's been flawless so far! Much more reliable than the 2010 VW TDI I sold before buying the Impreza!

I'm at 6 months and 9,000+ miles. I've done 2 oil changes. I'm really happy with the car. Gas Mileage is typically 35 to 36mpg range, but I'm anticipating it going down as the weather gets colder here in MN.

Biggest compaints are tiny ones!
#1 Average MPG display is off. It can be adjusted I believe, just haven't taken it in hand had it done.
#2 Easy to get less than 36mpg. It takes a light foot, but not a slow foot to get 36+. You need to be easy on the acceleration and no short trips
#3 The "green" of the directional/turn signal on the dash is not really bright green. (Lame, I know but just comapring to my old Outback)

To the OP: the size might supprise you depending how ancient your Forester is. Other than rear storage, its bigger than my 2001 Outback.

Here's what annoys me about the MPG display: it only changes in 3/10ths of an MPG increments. For example, if the MPG display shows 32.7 MPG, it won't change until it calculates 32.4 MPG or 33.0 MPG.

If Subaru is going to put a tenths digit on the display, then why not change the display in 1/10th increments? The computer is doing the math; let it change the display 1/10th of an MPG at a time.

I know it's a nit-picky thing. But come on.

IMHO.

I love my 2012 Impreza. Had it for 3 months, already have 5,000 miles on her. I agree 100% with MotorWeek's long-term updates.

I do mostly city driving, but took a total of 5 long trips this summer to the Adirondacks (300+ miles each). I calculate my fuel economy using an app on my iPhone, and my lifetime MPG is 27. BUT… several of those trips had a vehicle full of people and camping gear along with 2 kayaks on top. My average MPG over the last few trips (mostly city driving) is actually 29.3. I was hoping for better (at least something over the arbitrary 30mpg mark) but its not bad for such a versatile AWD vehicle. I guess I don't see how its possible to come anywhere close to Subaru's lofty claims of 36 mpg highway. For comparison's sake, my 2006 Honda Civic, which this vehicle replaced, had a lifetime mpg of 31.5.

I love pretty much everything else about the car: the handling is great, lots of room for hauling gear, a handsome no-nonsense interior, and love the roof rails. I can't believe I'm saying this, but I'm almost looking forward to winter. This is my first AWD car and I have a feeling it will roll through the snow like a tank.

My only complaint is the seats are a little tight and press up against my thighs & butt. Maybe I need to drop a few pounds!

Knock on wood, but I'm not experiencing any squeaky seats or oil consumption. FYI, my Impreza's build date is 05/2012.

Nothing wrong with being nit-picky. I'm the same way, and this kinda annoyed me too. But the thing that bothers me more is the speedometer. Why does it have hash marks in between every 5 mph? For example, there's a mark at 55, 57.5, 60, 62.5, 65, etc. Stupid and annoying. Now that's nit-picking!

First, it seems to me that most of the people who have problems have build dates in 2011. I'm not seeing a lot of complaints from people with cars with build dates in 2012.

Second, even the people complaining about problems are complaining about legitimate but minor annoying problems: squeaky seats, oil consumption, rattles in the A pillar. I'm not seeing any posts about blown engines, fried transmissions, cars leaving people stranded.

Last, we're talking 49,000+ Imprezas sold in 2012 in the USA, not counting the ones sold in 2011 and Canadian sales. The number of people posting here complaining about problems is VERY small for that number of cars.

As for me, build date March 2012, 3600 miles, no oil consumption, no problems and very happy. Gas mileage is 30 mpg overall (30 calculated, 31ish if corrected for odometer error), wish it was better, but I have too many short trips to get good mileage.

I did go on several break-in drives when I got the car, going through acceleration/deceleration with the paddle shifters to help break in the rings. I don't know for sure if that made a difference, of course, but well worth doing if you plan to keep the car for a long time, no matter what model you buy. More details on this in my previous posts.

I'm pretty satisfied. Mine has a build date of April 2012, so it probably had most of the quirks taken care of. I had the A-pillar rattles, but I took care of that with foam tape.

7,200 miles or so now. No mechanical issues and the AC is actually pretty darned cold.

Jan build date, got it in April. 4900km on it, no oil issues, converted to mpg I'm averaging 28.1 city. Only issue I had was passengers seat sensor which took 20min to fix at dealership. Love the car.

Mine is not even 45 days old yet with 3100+ miles on it and has also been flawless. Although I had no reliability problems with my 2011 VW TDI, I feel less worried with my Subie.

Pre-ordered. Delivered Dec 28th. Have about 11k miles on it. Acquired "dash rattles", I think from the A-Pillers. Will have the dealer take a look at in three or four weeks when I do the next Oil Change. Two complaints, other than the dash rattle: MPG displays is 5/6% overstated and Blue Tooth causes the iPhone to play music when I don't want it to, reducing the phones battery life. Also the MPGs are very much less than expected - get better mileage from my 2010 OB with the bigger engine.

Build date 10/11, picked it up Dec 20. Just hit 10000km.

No problems, MPG is better now, than it was in January at -15C (5F) on my 1 km commute, but still way less than the advertised Canadian MPG (but that was to be expected - the Canadian ratings are all high).

Great car!

Update - Rear passenger window does not "go down" anymore. Or it may never have, as I hadn't tested it before.

Window now works -- Don't know why it didn't and then now does??

I'm at 8200 miles, no oil issues, gas mileage is less than expected, I'm averaging 26-28 mpg & I drive mostly highway. The only thing that really pisses me off about this car is there has been a constant rattle from the trunk since about 3k. I through some insulation from Home Depot in between the trunk rug and the trunk metal which when I hit a bump this is where the sound is coming from. The insulation has made the sound a lot less loud, it still does it, but its def quieter. That and the navigation sucks in several ways but its a good looking car that is very practical. Overall I guess I would make the purchase again. I'm pretty sure that the first time I get it in the snow ill say it was a great purchase.

Have the Dealer look at the rattle as that should not happen. As for the NAV, it is what it is...

Did you inadvertently have the window lock on?? Were you using the master switch at the driver's position, or were you using the one at the RR window?

Pre-Ordered my Impreza, was one of the first to take delivery in this country (Dec 1). Car was the 174th Impreza to roll out of the factory. Was the pioneer with the passenger airbag malfunction which led to 4 Japanese engineers tearing apart my car. This led to the TSB that now exists for the defect. Most likely the first to lemon the vehicle (was a Premium sedan).

A whole lotta firsts (mostly not-so-good ones), and the end result is I have a Limited sedan, which SOA was kind enough to upgrade me to when I lemon'd the previous car. No big issues with this one!

Just shy of 2 months and 1800 miles with no issues. Just 2 weird occurrences when the weather was very humid and warm outside and I had the Windshield/leg Defrost on and the windshield fogged up a bit. Thermostat was set around 70 and the condensation was dripping and blowing from the passenger side fan beneath the glove box onto my Weathertech mat. Nothing set on AUTO on the fan switch as far as I knew but my friend did say I had the AC on....ddoohh! Maybe I didn't hit the recirc button and had the AC running so the system was sucking moisture from the outside in addition to the AC being on....

I have a pre-ordered car built in 11/2011

No issues to speak of, no oil consumption, I have a 5 speed and my average MPG after break in is about 30.5 on the display and 28-29 calculated at fill up (I think my average speed is 45mph, mostly back roads, not city, not highway).

I've seen up to 40mpg indicated on the highway at 65mph with cruise on, windows closed, and AC off.

I've driven in a couple of light snow storms - 2-4" with the OEM tires and they were fine, the car is great in the snow.

I love the hatch, I won't buy a sedan again.

Only 6000 miles on it so far, at this rate under 10,000 miles a year. I will probably drive this thing into the ground, but it will take 25 years to do that...

Built 11/11. Purchased in February. Now have 7500 miles. I have had ZERO issues with it other than MPG isn't as high as expected.

Although I have recently figured out how to drive it efficiently without going Prius-slow. It's a great cruising vehicle and I've found myself taking the long way home a couple times. Near mid-size space in a compact footprint. Damped hinge on the glove box is nice. Hatch is super useful. Got the aero bars to mount a roof box for family road trips. Love the seats. Love the space. Just love it.

Keep in mind I have the CVT, drive mostly city, and live in a place with rolling hills. Most of it is just normal hypermiling techniques but the most important thing is to relax and enjoy the ride. I love how smooth the cvt is and how quiet the ride is when around town under 55 mph.
I find its best to keep rpm at about 2-2.5krpm from stopped to about 25-30mph then keep the mpg gauge as close to straight down as possible until cruising speed. Sometimes its tough fighting the cvts programming. I keep the speed between the limit and 5 over on level ground. Downhill I'll accelerate a bit to carry more speed up the next hill. Going up a hill I keep the needle as straight down as possible while trying not to go more than 5 under the limit. Never accelerate to a red light or stop sign. I can keep the dash avg at around 30 mpg pretty easily now without getting a honk and a stink eye.

Purchased mine in August. So I guess I'm lucky with missing any defects. Overall, I love my car. Performance is awesome and extremely responsive. Fuel consumption is a quite great. I drive 19 miles one way so obviously I don't want to spend too much, but the other owners are right. Watch the heavy foot. Especially for the manual users. Side questions. Does anyone know if putting a cold air intake is bad for a standard impreza? Many thanks all.
