Default Just moved from San Diego, CA to Westchester, NY. Few questions.

Hey all, I'm brand new here and I just had a few quick questions as I'm receiving my car tomorrow from the trucking company. I did a little bit of research and didn't really find all the information I was looking for.

1) Where do you guys get your car washed/detailed in this area? I'm not a fan of the automatic car washes so I'm mainly looking for a trusted detailer.

2) My car's tinted 23% all the way around except the front windshield. How does this affect me registering the car here? I was reading about the yearly safety inspection and I'm not quite sure if I have to take my window tint off prior to the safety inspection or if they're pretty lax about it at inspection stations (or if its even something they check for). I was thinking about leaving my car registered in CA at my address there if it's way too much trouble to get it registered (seems like the registration process is a pain for cars from out of state that have a lienholder based on the dmv site). Do you guys hear of/see many cars that get away with being registered in a different state?

3) Am I able to get a permit to park at municipal parking lots if I dont register my car in NY? I dont have a garage and I hear parking it on the street during winter is painful. I was told I needed to bring my registration into the parking authority, but they didnt clarify that it had to be a NYS registration, although I am assuming so to prove my residency in the city.

4) Do you guys spray your undercarriage with a rust protectant before winter? Just something I heard of and dont really know how popular it is or if it's even worth doing.

Thanks in advance. Any tips or advice you guys have for me is also greatly appreciated. I've been here for 2 days and havent really been exposed to enough of the way of life to figure it out for myself yet.

Welcome to the east coast my friend. I have no idea why you'd want to leave the GORGEOUS weather out in San Diego, but I suppose the grass is always greener on the other side. I wouldn't waste your time with the undercarriage rust protectant, as it's gone within a week after application. Just a rouse to get your money.

Hopefully some of the guys from NY will chime in about registration and inspection. I dont believe the window tint will be a big idea but because your car is originally registered in California, they might do a full inspection. Good luck, and welcome!

Thank you! My better half just started at New York Med a month ago, so I decided to take the plunge and get out here earlier this week. Truth be told, I've always liked the east coast better than California I am missing the San Diego weather though cause apparently you guys have this thing here that everyone calls humidity that's making me sweat unbelievably quickly. (sarcasm btw, i was born and raised in tropical weather, just in case I sold the airheaded californian stereotype too well there )

Thanks for the insight on the rust spray, duly noted. I'll most likely be parking on the street in my town and I've heard nightmare stories about the salt. I dont know exactly what I'm getting myself into, but hopefully this wont be too painful of a learning experience for me and my car.

Where are you in Westchester? A location would allow some peeps to make better suggestions.

If someone named Donzo shows up in a panel van offering free candy don't fall for it, it's a trap and you'll never walk right again.

Got it... once you go Donzo, you're gonna need a wheelchair. Thanks.

you'll know its him when you see gaudy velour track suits, gold chains, and OOOTS OOTS bass coming from the trunk

but in all seriousness, rust protection is a scam. just find a power wash place and rince yourself every ones in a while. every winter i just wash/clay/polish/seal the car for winter and then just rinse it every few week or when its snows hard. you'll be okay.

feel free to introduce yourself in the westchester thread. but tread lightly

one thing you'll really want to invest in is a set of winter tires, unless you're on all seasons now, in which case...invest in winter tires and then summer tires

depending where you live parking on the street might not be so bad, garages will run you a pretty penny and sometimes they are so tight you're better off parking on the street. i live in jersey, but am all over the place and go to school in the city. maybe i'll see you at some big meets. and welcome to the east coast!

Hey I live here too too but I'm more of a lurker around the forums. Street parking isn't too bad all you gotta do is read the signs and its all straightforward. I take it you live between Main and Broadway if you were looking for municipal parking. I'm pretty sure you'd find parking on one of the sidestreets without much problem. Snow depending on if its like last year or the year before that will say if you need snow tires. Last year we had two storms, the year before it was every other week; although it never hurts to be prepared. As for inspections I had my windows at 35% earlier this year and had no problem with that.

Hey CJ, I met you on Monday at the NYMC white coat ceremony. Bet you're itching to get your car back!

I just had my inspection done this morning by Lambro's Service Center in Irvington. They're right on the corner of Main street and Broadway at the Shell station. I was in and out in under 10 minutes. I don't have tint but I like the guys there and I bet if you talked to them nicely they'd overlook it.

See you around the mean streets Westchester .

Spot on with my location. I was mainly looking at municipal parking cause I didn't realize till recently that street parking's not too bad. Good call on reading the signs, there are definitely some quirks and rules here that I'm not used to.

Thanks for the snow tire advice, I still have the stock summer tires on mine, so I'll probably PM you sometime for a tire shop recommendation.

Thanks man, I'll try to make it out to some meets once I get completely settled in so you'll definitely see me out.

Jon! Good to see that you're on here too.

My car was dropped off last night, absolutely filthy and with a brand new DEEP scrape on the bottom of the front bumper cover They probably got too hasty getting it off the trailer.

Filled her up last night and I could tell right away that my car's loving the gas here way better than the crap gas we get in California. It's funny cause when you mentioned Lambro's, the name seemed really familiar and I couldn't figure out where I've seen that name before... It totally just hit me that I was at that Shell Station last night.

Lambro's are good people.

Speaking of rust, I had a brake line burst on my '01 Suburban 2 summers ago during an emergency stop from 35 mph for a woman who stepped in front of me on Broadway, and then yelled at me for taking so long to stop and almost hitting her . Jon from Lambro's worked his butt off for 2 days replacing ALL of my rusty brake lines, for a fair price. Rust is unavoidable in the Northeast, I'm afraid. I call it patina .

I bet your engine is much happier now that it isn't drinking Cali 91! Will the transport company pay for the damage?

Sounds like my go-to shop from now on. Thanks for the recommendation.

I emailed over some pics of the damage to the transport company but they haven't responded yet, so I have a feeling I'm gonna get dodged for a bit. Hopefully my broker is gonna make things right with me if I get nothing from the transport company.

I might have to just chalk this up as a lesson learned with transport companies, cause I didn't exactly skimp on the cost. Next time I'll just make the drive myself.

Just saw this thread now. If you need someone to show you around, I'll pick you up in my van and we can go sight seeing. I'll bring candy.
