If you were worried about your dealer catching you, why would you mod your car in the first place?

it doesn't matter for routine maintenance, but if you file a warranty claim, and they decide to look into it, you are SOL. even if you flash back to stock. you gotta pay to play, and dishonesty only hurts the rest of us. |

![]() They don't check for mods under routine maintenance, only when you break something and want it fixed for free. |

Return to stock.
Have your car cleaned, inside and out, to remove any evidence of DNA. Put tape over all your VIN plates. Alter your engine and transmission numbers. Change the presets on all your radio stations, and set your clock to Hong Kong time. Steal someone else's license plate and attach it to your car. Wear a fake moustache and dark sunglasses. You'll be fine. |

Why is everyone hating on him for wanting to have warranty and mod? I am obviously missing how this hurts the rest of you in anyway? If he has minor mods without breaking into the motor and something goes wrong then I believe it should be replaced under warranty. Now if he mods heavily and blows it up a different story. I don't know many people who do not mod their cars in one way or another and when you take a performance turbo car its gonna get modded.

Exactly how it seems around here. If you buy a Subaru and put on intake then you might as well get ready to pay for entire engine if something breaks. That's really hilarious to me. I have never seen a forum where people are so quick to throw people out there for modding. I admit I have not owned a Subaru or a turboed car but I am/was looking for one. I'm quickly realizing that an STI is not for me since I would want exhaust/tune. They are to fragile for me if adding those mods are causing failures.

If you mod the car, you've altered their product to perform outside of their supported parameters. Like roadkill said, why should they pay for your **** up? |

So realistically doing a full exhaust, tune, and intake pushing them too much outside of their supported parameters? I'm not a punk kid that has deep pockets but I want a fun quick car to drive. If those mods are seriously putting reliability at risks then I want no part of it. Getting more power out of a stock motor is something people from all brands/makes want to do no matter if you drive a sports car or a big 4X4 truck. I have a Ram that I have done exhaust and intake on and if I have an engine failure then I should buy a new engine according to a few people here. I don't see how those simple mods are pushing so much more power to cause a failure.

It's HILARIOUS how people on this forum act when it comes to a MINOR mod and warranty, especially when it's just a tune that probably runs safer than the shi*** subaru tune.
Sure, subaru can deny it, but it's funny how people on here freak out about such a minor mod. |

I am not looking to argue with anyone I just want a better understanding of what I am potentially getting into. Spending 30k on a car to mod and only be stuck with it a broke down car then I would rather look for something else that would suit my situation better. My lack of knowledge on these cars scares me to say the least but I want to mod everything with quality parts and getting an excellent safe tune.

Most people experience 0 problems, but theres a small percentage that do. The bottom line comes down to if you are worried about keeping your warranty, leave the car stock. Simple as that. Quote:

I'm not sure if you guys own an 09 or above, but a simple stage 1 tune (torqued performance) makes the car 100x better. I honestly wasn't happy with the car stock (the stock tune is just THAT bad). It felt like I was driving a civic. No torque, hesitation, hiccups, etc. I honestly can't believe subaru has such a crap tune.
But for me, taking the risk with a stage 1 tune is 100% worth it to me. I spent 30k on a car and if I left it stock I'd be driving around a 30k car that I didn't like. Now I have a 30k car that I love. From hate to love with a simple stage 1 tune. That's how bad the stock tune is. That said, If I ever need to take it in for warranty work I'm just going to leave as is. If it's denied because of the tune, oh well, my fault. It's a risk I'm willing to take. It's the difference between enjoying the car or not. But I still don't get why so many people on this forum give others a hard time when they ask warranty questions with a tune. What is wrong with someone wanting to still have the warranty they deserve on a 30k car, AND having a car that FEELS like it's worth 30k (after the tune)? I completely understand the warranty can be denied, but it's not necessary to bash anyone who has questions regarding warranty/tune issues. |

with a simple stage one mod-like a tune from torqued performance or cobb, theyre safe. its driver error that leads to blowing stuff up. the dealer cant deny u warrenty if ur AC goes out and u have a turbo back exaust + tune. if u blow ur tranny with a stage one, they WILL find out unless u have a mod friendly dealership

It's a lot of driver error that leads to transmissions breaking, but WRX's still got labeled with "glass transmissions" to this day.
Also at comparing a Dodge Ram with exhaust to a Subaru with intake. |

The reason people start "hating" on those who try to defraud Subaru by returning to stock is that it makes Subaru look very, very hard at any failure on these cars. Even someone with a bone stock WRX or STi can be affected by the actions of a few dishonest people. The vast majority of cars on the road are stock. You hang out with a crowd that enjoys modifiying their cars. However, there are a LOT of people that buy a WRX, STi, or other "performance turbo car" and are completely satisfied with the stock performance, so the cars are never modded. Modifying your vehicle is your choice, and your responsibility. As has been said, "Pay to Play". |
