Default 1998 forester flashing check engine light

ok guys so having a issue with my 1998 forester S 5 speed manual with the 2.5L DOHC with about 152000 miles on it

so here is the story drove to work today (about 17 miles) car ran perfect no check engine light or anything. so car sat for about 8 hours in the lot at work came out started it and the check engine light starts flashing as soon as key is turned on. the car ran perfect though. so i called up the subaru tech i know to talk about it and then went had codes read at a parts store a block away.

had 7 codes set
P0500 Vehicle speed sensor malfunction (thrown twice)
P1101 (dont know what this is for) (thrown twice)
P1121 (dont know ) (throw twice)
P1540 Vehicle speed sensor malfunction 2 (thrown once)

scan tool was really not that great so after talking to subaru tech more on phone cleared codes and then drove the car home. the light never stopped flashing even for a second once codes were cleared. the whole time it ran fine if it wasnt for the flashing check engine light i wouldnt have thought anything was wrong. ran smooth couldnt even tell it was running at idle

so once i got home i scanned the car again sense cleared it had stored 11 faults (forgot to write down codes but know what they were for this time)
they are
Codes for metered air control and idle air control (7 of 11 set)
speed sensor faults (2 of 11 set)
o2 sensor malfunction (2 of 11 set)

also when the key is on (car not running) there are all kinds of noises, the electric fans keep cycling on and off repeatedly, and i think i hear the AC clutch clicking and the fuel pump cycling on and off

so i pulled the negative battery cable off and i am going to let it sit over night and see if it that does anything. after talking to subaru tech and what i think (i am a BMW apprentice tech) that it is either a issue in the ECU or a wiring issue

i have worked on the car as i get time over the past few days i have
-replaced my battery and terminals
-cleaned the connectors in the wiring harness
-checked for messed up wires

so far nothing has helped and now the car has a long crank and when it starts it idles high then drops to normal but then dies and if you can keep it going it is misfiring and smells like fuel

idk subaru that well so wondering if you guys have any idea. i got my cheap mac scan tool from work and tommorw will get you better fault codes

thanks
alex aka otto

According to Google 1101 and 1121 are neutral position switch issues for MT.

Sounds almost like test mode. On my car there are two connectors (green IIRC) under the dash that are not supposed to be connected unless you go into test mode. Does your car have that?

On mine they are both under the dash near the steering column. They must not be connected. I found this picture that seems to be taken at an odd angle but maybe it helps:

Default Thanks, that worked

I replaced the blinker relay in my 1999 Forrester, disconnecting some of the wires under the dash to get to the relay. When I was done and hooked everything back up, I inadvertently hooked up this test wire as well. Finding this post saved me a lot of time and probably money spent for a mechanic.

At least it was something simple, you should be ready for another 50k miles.
