Have a Nice Day? oil eating ej205 with 182k miles

ok I have 182K on my engine. I use valvoline maxlife piss 10w 30. Recently I did my oil change and found I was a qt down. Filled it and less then 7 days later I am almost another qt down. I have a high miles vf30 port and polished. Last time I had my tmic off a few months ago it looked ever so slight oil covering, nothing to worry about. My throttle body is always clean. When I ran oem air box it would often have a black spot on the filter. Recently got a spt intake. Always used a oem oil filter. Generally changed oil on time.

I wonder if I have a problem that would warrant a aos / catch can or if my engine is simply on it's last legs. If it's the engine, how long before boom?

Yet as long as the oil is full the performance is pretty normal and good. The pressure drops soon as I hit 1 qt low. My defi beeps at stop lights on and off.

Any insight?

So many threads and not enough to determine where the oil is going and why.

Try a different oil. If it still consumes a lot then maybe a cracked ring is causing the oil loss. Time for a compression/leakdown test. 182K is very good.

If you are not seeing oil anywhere, then a leak down is probably a very good idea. If you don't see smoke or anything coming out of the back of the car from oil burning then not quite sure where all the oil is going if you are that far down that quickly. It's probably a good idea to switch to a different oil (maybe try German Castrol or Shell Rotella T). See if you are still getting oil consumption with a different oil.

Oil rings man... they're gone.

The way I have found to limit my consumption is to not hold a gear while decelerating. Less vacuum on the combustion side means less chance of oil pulling through from the crank ect....

ok how much time is common in this situation before boom?

ok I don't see anything out the tail pipe. Generally I think I would see oil on the rear bumper considering how fast it's going. Or is my idea wrong in that thought?

As long as you have oil pressure the engine will keep running even if it burns it and or smokes. My 02 has just a tad over 100k and depending on how hard I drive it and if it sees a lot of highway driving I get some consumption (about a qt every 3k miles) on rotella syn 5-40w... the first 50kish miles it saw Mobil 1 5-30w. Mine never smokes, only looking at condensation through headlights can you see a slight blue. With your rate, if its burning it, you would think you could see it on the back of the car or as smoke. I agree with the compression test and or trying a different oil.

it does sound like oil rings with that high mileage. A teardown, new rings and hone will make that block purring like new. Different or heavier weight oil might be just a band-aid IMO.

Well I have a v7 ej207 short block but don't have the money to rebuild the heads just yet. I need to figure out if this will last a few months and a trip of 1000 miles.

Have you noticed any leaking coming from a seal or gasket? If you aren't smoking that bad I would look there. I don't know about these cars but I had an '89-90 sprint that ate 1-2 qt's per tank of gas and I put many miles on that one. The sprint had bad rings though on top of a leaky oil pan.

ok I am officially stupid. I checked the oil yesterday after I had briefly started the car. I filled a bit over half qt. Now I am over about that much. So I basically scared myself with my own stupidity.

I too noticed a sizeable DECREASE in oil consumption when I stopped using the motor to decel. I commute down a STEEP 2 mile grade everyday and leaving it in gear would draw about -14 psi vacuum. I have catch cans, and the amount I lost was NEVER EVER near the little amount I caught in the cans. I was burning 1 qt every 1,300 miles, but now It's more like 1 qt every 2,200 miles.

Maybe its your turbo? My car was going through about 1qt every 1500 miles with 100k on the odometer. My turbo and intercooler did not have that much oil in it but I replaced the turbo any way and it has not burned any oil since. Maybe its your turbo just blowing oil through, you said its a high mileage turbo. I remember for the amount of oil I was burning I never had any smoke coming out of my exhaust

Im on the same boat as you guys. I think My turbo is pushing oil into the intake. You can see some oil residue..... Im going to change my motor weight to see if anything changes.

182k I'd be surprised if you weren't eating oil. With your last post I'm not sure if you have a problem or not but as already mentioned your rings might be gone or if you are losing 1qt a week an entire ring land might be cracked. Also the aluminum blocks crack pretty easily, you could be losing it just through malformation of the block. a
