Default Need CargoBox help...14 State Road Trip

...and 5,000 miles!!

Ok, live in Midwest and planning to take my wife and son out to California, over his winter break from school.

My wife wants to take her '11 Outback, says it will give us more room...

I want to take my '12 Impreza Sport Limited 5-Door and get a Cargo Box. I have the ARB53 Thule Aeroblade Crossbars.

I would really like some input, as to what to look for in a Box. It would be just mainly for the extras (freeing up room in the back), and anything (shopping) we pick up along the way. Looking to buy, soon...

What I really would like, is if you all can post PICS of your Cargo Boxes sitting on top of Impreza 5 doors (hatch or wagon)...

Skybox looks nice, would like to see some variance in what everyone has please POST PICS to compare.

...plus any input on each of your selections and why.

If you don't get enough responses amazon, backcountry.com and rei.com usually have great customer reviews. Specific box won't matter. Find one that fits your price, size requirements, and shape preference.

I have this one http://www.thule.com/en-US/US/Produc...-Atlantis-1800

No pics of it on the car.. It's good though. But what I will say about it is that anything on the roof of your car is a big hit to MPG. I only break that thing out when it's totally necessary. I'd probably go in the outback..

A big roof box for our last long family road trip worked great.
I didn't want to buy a huge one so I rented one from Rack N Road.
They also credited part of the rental fee towards a purchase.

It's a Thule Excursion. Ski length boxes are very long on the Impreza and require removal of the antenna. This box works great other than for carrying skis and it fits under my garage door.

You don't have to remove the antenna, it bends fine. You could get a shorty one if it bugs you too

Yeah, that's my Yakima Skybox 16s that you're referring to. Just used it on its first road trip last weekend (900 miles altogether).

I like it because:
  • It opens from both the driver's and passenger's side.
  • It's the largest box (length-wise) that won't interfere with the antenna or the hatch.
  • I like the way it grabs solidly onto the crossbars.
  • I like the way it locks automatically when it's closed correctly.
  • It's tall enough and wide enough for carry-on size luggage.
  • I hear absolutely no wind noise when travelling.
  • It looks nice.
  • I can drive into my garage with the box mounted on the car.

You can't go wrong with this choice.
