Default Need a complete system for 2012 WRX!

Recently got my 2012 WRX and absolutely love it! However the audio system is awful. My knowledge on car audio is pretty limited so I have a few questions. Im basically looking for new speakers and a small subwoofer (I don't want a lot of bass...probably just one 8")

1) Does Subaru offer a complete system like this that is worth it?

2) If this isn't an option...what brands would you suggest? I don't really have a price range but money isn't a huge issue. I just need something middle of the road that is going to sound crisp.

3) Will I need to replace the head unit? Not sure if that is a big factor in sending power to the speakers.

4) Any suggested retailers? (I live in Dallas)

Thanks for the help!!

You might want to research this for about 2 weeks, then you'll have an idea. Car audio is a vast ocean so don't be lazy, it's worth it.

I too am thinking about upgrading my audio system for my WRX. Do you have a hatch or a wagon? I have a hatch and was looking at Audio Innovation's 10" enclosure.
As far as door speakers component speakers in the front and co-axial speakers in the rear. IMO, go to Crutchfield's website, fill in your car information and they will tell you what fits.
I like Crutchfield because they included wiring adapters and brackets and generally make it a plug and play application. They also have good reviews of products and they carry A LOT of different brands.
As far as the head unit goes, I personally like the way the factory unit looks. If you are fine with the limits that the factory EQ settings have and the overall sound level the factory head unit can produce, than you can get away with just swapping out the speakers and adding a sub. To me, the best feature an aftermarket head unit offers is its a more elaborate EQ. They really allow you to dial in and adjust to how you prefer your music.
All this is my personal opinion and I'm sure others will chime in with corrections and opinions of their own. Good luck with your build and keep us updated!

Go to a car radio installers. Bring your favorite music and play it through many speakers.

Beauty is in the ears of the beholder.

^^^Truer Words...

Crutchfield is overpriced. And you can't listen to a magazine. You can, however, go to a multitude of car stereo shops and listen to what they have on hand. It'll give you an idea of what's out there. Unless you plan on competing, going with your ears and your instincts is most likely the best yardstick for determining what products to buy.

Forget Subaru (or any other car company for that matter) for your car stereo needs. They're stupidly overpriced, and are analogous to Jack in the Box's level of quality in the world of burgermaking.

1. No. Subaru's definition of a complete audio system is completely different than what you're looking for. Remember, they only make cars.

2. Everyone has their own opinion on brands. Kenwood, Pioneer, and Alpine are at the top of the list in the average customer's head. Each one offers products from entry-level to high-end. If you want to get into very serious audio equipment, look into Mcintosh, Focal, etc, but those are VERY expensive.

3. The stock head unit is underpowered and will not correctly push aftermarket speakers. An aftermarket head unit will make the stock speakers sound a little better but no where near as good as an aftermarket set of speakers would sound when pushed by their own amplifier.

4. I live in CO but I'm sure there are tons of local car audio specific stores in your area just like my area. Search google maps for "car audio" and a ton of places will come up. Look in the reviews for each place and then go visit them. They will have head units, speakers, amps and subs all hooked up so you can try each one out with whatever music you want.

Start with the head unit, then look at component speakers, then look at subs.

I forgot to mention that Subaru does offer a subwoofer that goes under the passenger seat. My friend got it for his '12 WRX and I can't even describe how bad it sounded.

Stop by Soundscapes in Plano. They have some really nice stuff that is accurate and clear. Be prepared to add some sound dampening material to the doors to help the speakers be their best. I have been smitten with the Hybrid audio Clarus line of speakers and hope to have them installed in my 2013 Hatch by the end of November. I have the Audio Innovations rear sub box on the way for my 10" Nakamichi sub and I am just trying to decide on which amp to choose from. still back and forth between Alpine PDX 4 or Hertz HDP4. Plan to use the stock head unit and power the rear doors from it and the front components off of the amps front two channels and bridge the rears for the sub. I ordered my head unit harness from ae64 and it is a really nice piece that should make the install really smooth and keep the wire hackage to a minimum.

+1 on Soundscape! Also I have a small background in car audio . If you want PM me I will let u know how I could let you listen to my 3 channel setup I have in my car with my STOCK HEAD UNIT. I work at Brandon Tomes in McKinney and wouldn't mind at all if you wanted to swing by and chat.
