Default AWD tires

Hey guys newbie here. I need tires but I was wondering if its true that you have to replace all 4 if only 2 are shot ?

Yes you will need to replace all four tires at the same time. Reason for this is it could screw up your differential if you only change two and trust me the last thing you want is a diff going out

Yes, you should replace all 4. I THINK that the tires have to be within 2/32nds of eachother to be considered "OK".

Side question: Why are only 2 shot? Did you not rotate your tires or something? You have to stay on top of that!

I agree witht hese guys, for a 2wd vehicle like a fwd car or a rwd car it is different, you can just swap the tires from front and back. But since your have a awd car all 4 are rotating and will need to be equal otherwise you will screw something up...like for example your diff ^

Depending on why you have to replace 2 tires, you can get new tires shaved to match wear on the other 2. If the other 2 are old/nearing the end of their life then there's no reason to ruin new tires, buy 4.

I would advise against altering tires. Just bit the bullet, buy 4, and stay on top of rotating and balancing them!

I'd recommend a tire tread depth gauge. They cost about $5 from any auto store or Amazon. That way you can rotate the tires, front to back, when you see a slight difference in tread depth. No need to use a penny or guess at the right tire rotation interval.

As mentioned, tire rotation is critical to get the most from a set of tires on the Subies.

IMO, shaving is a valid choice in some cases. For example, you damage one tire and the other 3 are still at 75% tread.

We bought an automatic Forester with 2 mostly worn winter tires in the front and nearly new rear tires. I knew something was up, but the car was a steal at the price.

The clutch packs needed replaced and the car would bind/shutter on slow corners and in parking lots. A LOT.

I knew that's what was wrong going into it and what it was from. Years ago, my '95 had the similar issue, but not bad enough to fix.

Moral of story: keep all tires as similar in tread as you can by rotating. NEVER use 1 or two different tires.

You can also buy used tires at a great price off of ebay. They list the tread depth, and you can measure your own to match.

It doesn't hurt to drive it a few miles on mismatched tires, but it's not something you want to do for a long drive.
