Default MANUAL transmission - how is the MPG?

The Impreza with Manual Tranny is EPA rated lower than the CVT, but in my experience, manuals can generally outperform automatics in fuel economy regardless of what the ratings say.

Manual 2012+ owners,

What is your:

MPG?
City & Highway percentages?
Topography (flat, hills, other)?

My Forester only gets 22-23 MPG I need a boost in MPG.

I have a Sport, so the predicted MPG are even a bit lower than other 5speeds.

My calculated overall average MPG (6400 miles) is 28.29 (the dash display would be closer to 31mpg).

This is since last December when I got the car, so includes winter driving, break in and winter fuel mixes.

I don't drive on the highway much, and not true 'city miles'. I live in upstate NY and most of the roads I drive are sub 55mph zones, very hilly, and with a fair number of traffic lights.

For comparison my previous car, on the same commute, would return about 32-33mpg calculated, 2008 Hyundai Elantra 5spd.

I think the CVT returns better overall numbers partly because the highway gear ratios are more conducive to fuel economy, and also because it is not full time 50/50 AWD -- so like many other manufacturers AWD cars it has a FWD bias, with computers and electronic clutches to transfer power as needed.

This is not confirmed, and makes CVT drivers squirm and complain, but it is probably true, none-the-less.

However all the testing videos of the Subaru AWD system I've seen use the Auto electronic clutch version, and it is excellent, and Outback owners who have owned both the Auto and Manual versions with the two different AWD systems think the Auto version is more responsive (the manual viscous coupling system requires slip to heat the fluid to transfer power, so it takes longer to respond), though both are excellent.

The CVT version of AWD totally stomps most every other manufacturers AWD system, it should not be considered a weakness to have the FWD bias, as you get the benefits of the better fuel economy, but also superior AWD performance as needed. However I don't expect Subaru to advertise this, as it cuts into their marketing of the superior "all the time AWD" message they want to deliver.

For these cars, I don't think the Manual version will return higher MPG than the CVT version. The forum seems to back this up.

Look over the forum, there is a recent discussion of the 5spd Impreza that highlights both the benefits and weaknesses of the transmission and gearing in the new impreza. The gearing on these cars is a bit weirdly spaced, 1-3 are acceleration, 4-5 are overdrive for fuel economy.

I have the base model. Just under 6000 miles on the car. Averaging 29.1 per dashboard readout, which seems to be pretty accurate based on calculations I did for the first few tanks. About half of my driving is my 10ish mile each way commute, mostly on local roads during rush hour. The other half of my driving is 3-5 hour highway rides at 75-85 mph, well above the speed for max economy. Nearly all of my driving is moderately hilly. Very little of it is mountainous or completely flat.

Dashboard says 24.0, but then again I'm like 50 miles into owning the car and it's all stop and go thus far.

I've got a 2.0i Premium with a 5-speed. My trip computer says I've been getting 37.5 mpg over the last 1000 miles or so, but fuelly tells a different story, saying that I've been getting 34 or 35 mpg.

The truth is probably somewhere in between.

i get 31ish at 75mph. over 35mpg if i drop the speed to 60-65. lifetime is indicating 30.0mpg on the car, and my fuelly is 29.1. my normal driving i would say is 75% highway, 25% city.

I've been averaging a hair above 30 MPG (hand calculated) over the last 10 or so fill-ups with an average speed of 22-24 MPH.

Needless to say, I'm satisfied.

Thanks everyone. It looks like 28-30 MPG combined is about what people are usually getting here. I'd be very happy with that, as it would be a big savings over what I get now.

Yup, pretty much exactly what the EPA sticker states for combined fuel economy.

Unless you drive mostly City, probably won't get the bold sticker number.
