Just to save anyone the trouble of reading all this crap...OP has q rack installed at yimi's shop. It shudders at low speeds. yimi says its rack. q rack sends new rack same problem. OP and yimi think its the rack again. yimi refuses to ship rack back for inspection. (even tho its not his rack) claims he is owed labor. This is usually not how shops get "paid back" for defective parts. OP writes silly comments saying "you weren't there" many times. Conclusion= racks are not the problem.
Solution have yimi sell me the first rack for $200. Its better than nothing and I've seen the DIY not that big a deal.
Solution 2 I'll take both racks and ship you my 05 sti rack as well for $200.

p.s I will video my steering to show it doesn't have any issues on my car.

I offered to buy one or both. I'll go $250 on the rack in the shop. Then yimi will only be out a little labor.

No he hit the nail on the head. Everyone in here agrees on this.

Bottom line, if the rack isn't defective, Q-Rack doesn't owe Yimi anything. BUT Yimi owes Q-Rack a rack.

The fact that it only does it at low speed/parking is proof it's not the rack. Not sure how Yimi doesn't understand how a steering rack functions.

The rack is not the issue here, and has absolutely nothing to do with the promise made to the shop; that the install + parts would be paid during install, NOT AFTER THEY RECEIVED THE RACK, LIKE YOU KEEP SUGGESTING. Then, when trying to get a hold of Qrack after not paying, they did not respond, and therefore they cannot send the rack back, until paid, as agreed upon.

If you don't get that, then you need look up the word promise & agreement, and you will see thet Tibor and Qrack cannot keep their word.

You really think that the shop would agree to do the install for me without getting paid the day of?????

For those of you that still don't believe me, I think you could find out very quickly who is telling the truth. Just think about it... How would one go about proving this.

Can we just move this thread out of the Technical section already and into vendor reviews? It (sort of) started off as a "lets diagnose the problem" thread, but it's pretty much devolved into a he said, she said pissing match.

JASWRX doesn't seem to be interested in diagnosing/fixing the issue anymore. Just defending his version of events. Any negotiation between him, Yimi, and Tibor should probably be taken care of privately, offline, and not in a technical forum.

I have already said that I am taking my car in again, so I obviously am trying to fix the situation. The people that have personally reached out to me, I thank you, and will be taking my car into xxs shop (not mentioning names) to figure out how we can solve this issue (even a year later).

And I admitted that this should be in the vendor review section, not the technical section.

It's sad when people just don't take my word, as If I was lying and making stuff up.

Again most part makers will not cover the labor, (let alone send another part without receiving the first one back). If Qrack agreed to do this, then thats between them and the shop not you. Qrack, and most people who commented on this thread think its not the rack, or "both racks" as you seem to think.
Estimated rack replacement I'd (generously give 7 hours, tech paid at most $20/hr = $140. Should be much faster second time. Tie rod end for 06 wrx $30 retail at most. My offer still stands $250.

I never said your agreement included waiting for the rack to be sent back. What I said was that any agreement Q-Rack made was on the basis that the first rack was defective. You keep denying this, and it makes you look retarded. No vendor here would agree to cover labor on a part that works.......not going to happen.

You were sent a 2nd rack, which proved that your car has a problem, not the rack. THIS is why Q-Rack should not pay Yimi for labor, and it would be completely unfair for them to pay for Yimi's failure to diagnose your car. Seriously......how do you not get that??

I want you to answer a question for everyone here. IF this new shop fixes your problem, and it turns out to NOT be the rack, would you think it's fair for Q-Rack to foot the bill because Yimi failed? Yes or no, is it fair/right?

If you answer yes........you are a tool, and represent everything wrong in society.

You are way off in numbers. It's not my rack, it is in the shops possession I invite you to call them and make them the offer, and see what they say.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics as of May of 2010 shows that the 14,300 automobile mechanics in the Los Angeles metropolitan region earned a mean $18.46 per hour or $38,390. I could see the tuner or engine builder making 40 per. And I can see the shop charging high hourly rate with taxes, energy, insurance ect.

Unfortunately (unless you are a tech) I have found that in metropolitan areas here in California that $18-20 would be on the low side. In truth it's closer to to $25-30 range for a skilled tech job (not a Firestone/Sears type tech).

Edit: I'm on your side, but your numbers are low for his area.

Its not about the tie rod ends its about the inners which vary in length, because Q-Rack doesn't guarantee an 02-03 compatible rack. Unless you provided the core, you generally have to wait until they start your rack to know what core you are getting so you can order your inner tie rods. BTW, Moog inner tie rods are a whopping $14 at Rock Auto, rounded up. Installing them with either a pipe wrench or an inner tool should take... 3 minutes? That includes the 30 seconds dedicated to putting on some Blue Loctite and another 30 for tapping the lock washers.

The OP's tie rod *ends* would have been compatible. I sure hope his shop would know that but I'm starting to wonder...

This is not true. My 1st rack was made for 2002 WRX. NO core, no inner rods, and guaranteed to be a straight drop in, and it was.

The 2nd was not compatible, but Tibor totally admitted to, and certainly apologized, and said he would pay Yimi. We are just glad that they had them in stock at a local parts shop that day.

I think you are mistaken. I said your inners weren't compatible between the two QRacks, but your outers are. I believe you said the second rack was from an 06? Moog outer tie rod ES3712 is listed for an 02 and an 06, Impreza and Forester. If your shop replaced the outer tie rods that is their error. Again they should have known that.

All someone has to do is turn the shaft lock to lock on the bench on the first rack to see if it is smooth. If it is all this drama ends and the shop screwed up...twice. I'm sure Ashkay and Tibor suspect this so they are done with you and your shop until they see a rack. That's a reasonable position.

In lieu of calling people names, I was thinking of ways to actually solve this problem (cheap). The most likely issue is that one of the PS hard lines got pinched during the 1st remove and replace of the rack. The quick rack isn't getting enough flow so it shudders. Once the engine RPM come up, the PS pump generates enough flow/pressure and the shudder goes away.

You apparently don't want to blindly start replacing lines cause they are expensive, you have to pay labor and its a messy job.

Why not go the other way. Find a machine shop and have them make you a slightly smaller PS pump pully (like 5% - 10% smaller). That ought to cost you less than $200 and fix your problem. Plus the nice part is that the install doesn't even require crawling under the car.... As an added benefit, you end up with a cool looking custom PS pump pully.
