Post Help! Strange rattle from exhaust

I've noticed lately a sound at about 2800 RPMs on the shift from first to second and second to third, (usually kind of "brisk" acceleration) a rattling that sounds like a heat shield or pipe vibration. It happens during "mid-shift" when I release the gas and depress the clutch and then complete the shift. Has anyone else had such a thing? I'm pretty darn sure that it isn't tranmission related, or clutch, since I can get the sound standing still in the driveway and revving the engine up to 3000 RPM and then taking my foot off the gas and on when the revs drop I hear it. Some kind of a harmonic vibration thing going on. Hard to detect though because of the exhaust system has all those shields and parts and the converter. Any ideas.

Note I'm seeing the dealer this week for service, but they never seem to be able replicate stuff like this. Thanks for any help or suggestions.

welcome to the world of Subaru my man. when a car has 987986768 heat shields, they are boud to come loose a bit and rattle. its very common. from ym eperience, %99 of the subies get "the heat shield rattle"

I would suggest rev matching your car in neutral... find otu what rpm the rattle starts at, have someone under your car lookign for the shield... either bend it, quick steel it, or rip it off. try not to rip it off!
Good luck! My heatshields are REALLY GETTING TO ME... Hehehe, i am in the process of using lots of welding stuff and quicksteel
pretty soon i am just going to give up and buy new headers! LOL

Hey, my '98 is starting to make that exact sound going from 1st to 2nd! Thank you, thank you, thank you. I thought I was just losing my mind because I can't get it to do it all of the time. Sometimes it happens when I am turning right and sometimes it happens when I am going straight.

Looks like it may be time to do some exhaust mods!

I took my car to the dealer today to have the passenger side power window switch checked out and the exhaust noise too. They admitted that there are a ton of heat shields under there and that one of them had a spot weld coming loose and they took care of it. Still a little noticaable, but better - hey it's a Scoobie they sound a little rougher than most 4 bangers. Maybe I'll redo the exhaust some day and go with a header and pipe and Stromund exhaust. BTW the lousy little switch is $40! The window can go down, but not up. Oh well the wife gets irritated so I'll fix it next time. Of course like any good dealer they don't have the part in stock and will have to order. Figures!

Sounds like a heat shield to me. I had the same problem on mine. WHere one of the clams was that held it on, it had rusted off so it wasn't even connected to anything and completely loose on the exhaust pipe and it was really annoying me. So i got under my car with a screwdriver, a pair of pliers, and a hacksaw. Problem solved.
