uneven wear (middle of tire tread)
So i had my car in for an oil change, and the mechanic was having a quick look at the tires as we were talking about replacing them for a winter / summer setup.
He noted that the rears have uneven wear. The center of the tread is worn down more than the outside. In his experience, this comes from over inflation. So... he checked the door jamb, checked the tires, and none were over inflated. The front tires do show some of this wear, but nowhere near as noticable. FWIW, i am not the original owner of these tires. They were on the car when i bought it for about 30,xxxkm's, and i've put on 30k since. The dealership rotated them since i've owned it as they saw fit, they also inflated them for me if required. I've never had to add air to three of the tires, only to one that might have a bead-leak. Our best guess is the previous owner had them over inflated at some point. Anyone know if there's anything else that can cause this type of wear? For the sake of tread pattern, the tires are the original Michelin Pilot Sport A/S. (not A/S Plus).

the original design was almost certainly for a larger size and when the 'shrank' it....it behaved a bit different and wore a bit unevenly ive run tires at 40-42 psi for 20k+ miles and they didnt wear unevenly |

they seem to **** up just about every tire they come up with this is why i wont buy badyear tires....if somebody GAVE me a set, i might use them....but id never BUY any some designs are trying to be too much to too many and they fail at weird points.....and sometimes weird wear patterns are the result of having to alter a design over a large range of sizes and tire internal construction tires are a LOT more complicated than most people would ever think they are i personally think that that size tire is way too small for a car that weighs 3300 pounds.....i would consider getting a used set of 17x8's and put some 225/45's on and be happier all around |

well, i DO have bbs from 2004 STi for summer duty (tires tbd) ... and it would be nice to match sizes year round ... buuuuut i'm not really interested in the extra layout of cash at the moment, nor the hassle of offloading my stock wheels.
Thanks for the thought though. |

When checking the treadwear are you checking to wear bars or the deepest point?
Some tires have different depth by design (I think Eagle GT have this feature). Krzys |

This was a visual inspection. Standing at the front tire, looking at the back while it was up in the air, you could see that the middle of the tire was more worn than the outsides.
