Default PART 1 Key Features of Link / Vipec G4 ECU's

Key Features of the Link / Vipec G4 ECU

My name is Miles Hechtman and I am the lead tuner at Fine Line Imports. FLI has been a large Link dealer for the last 8 years. I have seen the evolution of the company, hardware and software. All the software engineers write in house and works directly with the in house hardware engineers in New Zealand where Link ECU / Vipec are located. If you have not looked at the Link G4 software, I do encourage you to. It is much different then the G1-G3.

To down load the PC Link software visit here (click the PC Link icon located at the top right corner), www.linkecu.com.

The purpose of this article is to explain a few key features that Link / Vipec G4 platform offers. The G4 platform has been used by Link for 4 plus years now. There has been many new control and visual features, additional supporting applications and bugs that has been worked out which are all free of charge to down load. These are treated as firmware updates. There are a few different key features that I want to explain in detail which are very useful when mapping an engine. They are Layouts, 4D/5D Mapping and Data logging.

LAYOUTS
The first feature that I want to talk is about is the Layout. The layout is a powerful, simple tool which is the back bone of your Link G4 tuning software. The Layout is simply the visual view of how the runtime values, gauges, digital readings, tuning parameters, logging parameters (playback and real time), different control windows are set up and organized. Each window is called a Page, which can be customized to your liking. This means you can change colors, visual effects, sizes of everything! After you spend a few hours setting up your Layout, you can save it and use it in the future including firmware upgrades. This is a very powerful tool / option because it allows you to organize all your tuning parameters in a way that makes sense to you. This is also nice because it allows you to create customized Layouts for different applications (cars, boats, trucks, planes, etc.).

AVCS / VVT Example
Link G4 ECU's support many different VVT platforms (Subaru JDM & USDM single / dual AVCS, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Toyota, Audi, BMW, Porsche, Honda, Ford, Suzuki, Holden, Renault, Mazda and GM and Scion).

You can not only set up your tuning parameters, but you can set up the runtime values for those parameters. Lets use the AVCS system on a 2006 Subaru STI as an example. Obviously you would have all the tuning parameters visible (main AVCS Target map), a 3d graph and other main runtime values such as coolant temp, intake air temp, throttle position, etc... You can also add an VVT runtime value menu, which can include Inlet Left Hand / Right Hand Position degrees, Error Counter, Signal, System Status for diagnosis and confirmation purposes which can be very useful.

Fuel, Ignition and Other Examples
There are many different fuel and ignition maps which can be set up the same way as the VVT. You can get creative with them and organize what runtime values you want to see along with how they look. For example, Crank Fuel, Accel Fuel, Boost, Knock Control, fans control and of course Main Fuel and Ignition are just a few.

KEEP GOING ON PART 3, OUT OF PICTURE SPACE AGAIN!

Default Part 3, Key Features of Link / Vipec G4 ECU's

4D & 5D Fuel and Ignition Mapping
The Link G4 platform offers 4D & 5D fuel and ignition mapping. The Main Fuel and Ignition map are in 3D which means there are two load sites (RPM and MAP or MGP for example) which the fuel / ignition table looks at. In the G4 software, you can add up to 22 columns and 20 rows of resolution. You can add specific load sites or rescale the loads as you wish (every 500, 750 rpm increments or add a load site, etc.). If you wanted you could also just have a simple 2D fuel map which would mean only one load site the fuel table would look at (RPM only for example).

4D
The idea of 4D fuel mapping is where creativity meets more resolution. The 4D fuel map is an overlay map that is used on top of the Main Fuel map. This idea is pretty straight forward except you can change the load site! This means you can have your main 3D Fuel Map in place and activate your 4D fuel map to be on on the time or by an internal switch (using switch logic - conditions like ECT (engine coolant temp), IAT (intake air temperature) temp, Digital Input above or below thresholds, etc. or an external switch (for methanol injection, etc.). A commonly used 4D Fuel Map is gear dependent, which means every gear has a 2D trim from X RPM to Y RPM.

5D
5D fuel mapping works the same way as the 4D except you can change the load site once again! Another example that can be used is Throttle Position. You can scale it to what ever you want but now you have a detailed fuel map based on TPS. This can be very useful if using larger injectors, different fuel pressure, large turbos, etc.

Keep in mind your cranking fuel maps, accel fuel maps, Dual fuel maps (activated on an external dash switch, i.e. race fuel map) are completely separate then the main 3D, 4D and 5D fuel mapping! All this can be used for ignition as well. This allows you to really fine tune a custom or standard engine set up.

Default Part4, Key Features of Link / Vipec G4 ECU's

Data logging
Data logging is standard on most stand alone ECU's these days, some are better then others but as long as you get the info you want in a log then I guess that is the most important. Link took data logging a couple steps further. Not only can you log every parameter, setting, input and output that the ECU offers, but it does so in a user configurable manner. You can change the colors of the items you want to log, view the log in many different visual ways and most importantly, you can play back the log in the actual map with a pause feature! Standard datalogging is up to 4 MB.

Playback Feature
The playback is a very useful feature because it allows you to make adjustments in what ever window you want to throughout the log. This will cut down tuning time quite a bit.

Link ECU's version of data logging brings an additional feature which is data analysis. This can be very useful when you need it.

Summary
Link ECU's G4 platform has been an evolution of engine management throughout the past 20 years of the companies existence. There have been many new features, and well thought additions to the G4 software which is on going. I hope I explained some of these features and encouraged some of you to down load the PC Link software and check it out for yourself.

Feel free to email me or post any questions you have about Link ECU software or products.

Hello,

FLI offers a Flex Fuel conversion package for any Subaru car powered by a Link / Vipec G4 ECU. This package includes a Flex Fuel sensor (measures the percentage of ethanol), a Link G4 ECU and custom mapping by FLI. This does not include the fuel system which is also needed.

FLI has completed and tested this package on a 2006 Subaru WRX using a Zeitronix Ethanol Content Analyzer (ETA) gauge along with the above package. FLI is currently working on offering this package without the ETA gauge which should be completed shortly.

The basic summary on how this setup works is simply you can run your engine on either gasoline fuel or Ethanol without any map switching. The Link G4 ECU map is configured to take the signal from the Flex Fuel sensor which allows you to map for the different variations of ethanol.

Here is more info on the current setup:

http://fliblog.wordpress.com/2012/05...ng-subaru-wrx/

This package is available for sale but professional installation and tuning is required.

Let me know if you have any more questions,

Hello,

This conversion will allow you to run 91 octane fuel, E85 fuel or anything in between with no map switching.

Basically you can perform this conversion two ways. One way is fully tested and 100% works and the other way FLI is performing final testing which should be done by the end of the month.

Option 1: Fully Tested

Parts - Ethanol Sensor (GM / Siemens) and Zeitrionix Ethanol Content Analyzer gauge.

Option 2: Final Testing in progres
s

Parts - Ethanol Sensor (GM / Siemens) and X resister.

Either package requires a Link or Vipec ECU, a fuel system capable of running E85 and professional tuning to work properly. FLI offers this mapping only with in house tuning only.

Let me know if you have any more questions.
