17x7.5 +48/+53 5x100 that weighs less than 15lbs?
Ok I’ve decided to purchase my last sets of wheels for my WRX. The plan is to purchase TWO complete sets; one with a street friendly tire and the second with an Autocross oriented tire, R-S3, R888 Ect. I will stay with the 2 piston calipers with upgraded pads and rotors.
My goals being Function over Form. I’m only going to run a 225-45-17, nothing else, I don’t plan any major power upgrades to warrant a heavier tire. The wheel requirement has to be 17x7.5 +48 to +53 5x100 Wheel weight will be the deciding factor. Options so far: Enkei RPF1 17x7.5 +48 5x100 Silver Color #3797758048SP Claimed weight: 15.2 lbs OZ Alleggerita HLT 17x7.5 +48 5x100 Anthracite Color Claimed weight: 15.2 lbs Added thanks to Spenk: SSR Type C 17x7.5 +49 5x100 #T217250 Claimed weight: 14.9 lbs Added thanks to vicious_fishes: Advan RG-II 17x7.5 +48 5x100 #Z7576 Claimed weight: 15.1 lbs Added: Volk Racing CE28N 10-Spoke Wheel 17x7.5 +50 5x100 Claimed weight: 13.2 lbs http://www.measurespeed.com/volk-rims-wheel-weight.php Buddy Club P1 Racing QF 17x7.5 +47 5x100 #BC01-QF177547510-G Claimed wright 12.7 lbs http://www.directtuning.com/store/p-...-gunmetal.aspx Discontinued: SSR Comp Forged Claimed Weight 13.2 lbs My question being: Is there any wheel out there that exactly matches my criteria: 17x7.5 +48/+53 5x100 that weighs less than 15lbs? Custom? Oneoff? Forged? If so post where you found or where to get them, not just the fact they exist, because I plan to buy 8 of them. 17x7.5 RPF1 - Clears Brembos with spacers.

What class are you autocrossing in?
I thought the kosei ts1's were either under or right at 15lbs in those sizes. Finding them though, that's the hard part. |

SSR Comps. Forged. 13.2 lbs.
No longer made. Find 'em in the classifieds or on ebay. I own two complete sets in (factory) gold. Good luck. |

Stumbling around the internet I have found what I think is the perfect wheel.
IF anyone can verify the weight. Buddy Club QF 17x7.5 +47 5x100 #BC01-QF177547510-G (I will sacrifice 1mm offset for an addational 24lb weight savings.) ivwe been in search of the best wheels for a LONG TIME and the best bang for the buck light wheels are the 17x8 rpf1
anything else would be too much and a 17x8 will allow the widest range of tire size to be used 17x7.5 is a waste of time screw the rules....run sm and have a better car to dd |

Any reason in particular you're locked into the 17x7.5 size? As others have said, a 17x8 wheel is good for a lot of tire options and the half inch extra width doesn't make a big difference in weight. In addition, an 8" wheel is still legal in STX, so you don't have any worries there.
Also, have you considered other sizes besides 225/45? If you went with a 17x8 wheel, then you could run 235/40 tires and that would be a good setup for AutoX; especially with the WRX 5-speed transmission. The 235/40 tire has a slightly smaller diameter than 225/45, so you'd essentially be changing the final drive of your transmission. The gearing of the WRX 5-speed tends to be a little tall for most AutoX courses, so running a slightly lower diameter tire will give you a little better acceleration and keep you in boost a little longer. In addition, a wider tire is always a good thing for AutoX. In regards to the tires you listed for AutoX: The RS3s are a good choice for STX but they don't come in 235/40. Dunlop Star Specs are another popular STX choice and do come in 235/40. As a point of reference, a 225/45/17 RS3 weighs 25 lbs while a 235/40/17 Star Spec weighs 24 pounds. Wider tire and lighter! You could also consider a 245/40 tire as well, but I'm not 100% certain if there would be fitment concerns on your 2002 WRX. One other thing I wanted to mention about AutoX tires....the Toyo R888s you mentioned are not legal for STX. The minimum tread wear allowed for ST* classes is 140. The R888s are 100 treadwear. If you like Toyos, the R1Rs would be legal, but RS3s and Star Specs seem to be the more common choice for STX WRXs. As for your daily wheels and tires, I don't really have any other options to provide that others haven't already mentioned. What you get for daily driving obviously doesn't have to be bound by AutoX rules, so just get what you like and enjoy! BTW, I noticed your profile says Havelock, NC...that's where I grew up! It's not everyday you see or hear from someone that lives in Havelock. Anyway, good luck with your purchases! Last edited by jprice130; 10-21-2012 at 03:44 PM. |

17x8 was the original consideration, but the extra weight of material and available offsets is what sent my search back to 17x7.5.
Along with most 225/45-17 tire listing dimensions are done with a 7.5 wheel. I was going to go with a 7" wide for less weight but that usually affects sidewall rigidity/turn in response. The 235/40 was also a consideration, but most tire manufactures recommend an 8.5 wheel for optimum contact patch/sidewall stiffness. The trade off of overall rotating mass vs contact patch/tire availability/offset. I've run 2 events on the Sparco Assetto 17x7.5 +48 (19.3 lbs) with my R-S3's. So far once I'm in second gear I really never have a need to get back in to first, on the courses I've run. After following a veteran Auto-x-er, with a STX 2006 WRX on coil overs and Starspecs, the last event He ran: 45.779s I ran: 47.069s, on 196K mi stock struts, springs, and sways. Fastest license plate car time of the day was SSM class corvette 43.6s on Hoosiers. Jprice130 Yea down here in Havelock, we've been running 2-3 auto-x events a year on Cherry Point on the foxtrot runway. Plenty of space to play. As for the 2 sets I've always had a backup plan, if one or two get damaged. As I've found with discontinued wheels in the past, is really hard to match 1 to a set of 3. OCD I guess. |

I would join the others to say you're making an odd choice by avoiding 17x8. I've been running that size with 235/40 Star Specs and it think it's a great combination. You can run the 225s for general use.

What wheel and offset are you using? How is the wear on the 235's and at what pressures? |

You are wasting your time looking at anything other than 17x8. Seriously look at picking up some Enkei RPF1 wheels and some proper 245/40/17 tires. You'll more than make up your perceived weight loss with more contact patch.
Look at most national level competitors in the STX/STU classes. (those driving all wheel drives) Most will we using a 17x9 with 245/40/17. They are giving up the little bit of weight for contact patch. |

To the OP, most of us here are seriously just trying to help you get the best AutoX setup. We're not just trying to win an argument. Get 17x8 wheels and run 235/40 or 245/40 tires. As mentioned above, this is a proven setup for nationally competitive STX WRXs. I currently run 235/40 star specs on 17x8 RPF1s and they have been great. With that said, I'm probably going to go with 245/40 when my current tires wear out. If you're still going to get a separate set of wheels/tires for daily driving then do the 7.5" wheels and the 225/45 tires for that if you like. |

TWS T66-F 17x8 +42 weighs 13.9 pounds. Costs Y68,000, or about $618 each before shipping. But that's the lightest wheel I know of in that size.
