Default Purchased a new car today also! (long)

So, today Heather and I went shopping again. After a terrible experience at Woburn Toyota my hopes were pretty low on every finding something we liked at a price that I think was fair.

Little bit on the Woburn Toyota issues:
We went in to test drive a Used 2003 Toyota Corolla LE. I didn't like the drive much. Felt like a big Buick (sorry Jim!). Steering just wasn't responsive like the Japanese cars I'm use too. Not a fun drive at all. Overall pretty comfortable though, good amount of space. Reliability is high too.

So the car we drove had 15K miles and was priced at $14K. Invoice on a new 2004 is $14,600 mind you. Apparently their internet prices aren't negotiable, and my offer of $11,000 was less than they paid for the car at auction.

That was the end of that.

We drove a 2002 Ford Focus also that evening with 22K miles. Price was around $11K I think. The car just felt like a piece of junk (and I really wanted to give the focus a shot) for the mileage. It has 4 brand new tires (stickers on them still) so that seemed strange. It was a total dog on power. Ever Heather said so. She liked the interior better than the Corolla though. We just didn't think we could afford new, and the used ones weren't very impressive. So we passed on them.

Today we go and drive a 2004 Sentra 1.8S out. I hit up Merchant Auto in Hooksett. They had like 6 of them (fleet cars) with about 8K miles on them. We drove one, liked it a bunch, but it was pretty beat up. List price was $13K. I was hoping to get into one for around $11K, but we never talked numbers. He was going to find us one with $5K miles on it and call me tomorrow.

Tonight on the way back from Merchant we hit up Peters Nissan in Nashua and drove a brand new 2004 1.8S. Just seemed much better than the used fleet cars at Merchants. I was surprised how much better it felt.

I flat out told the sales guy we don't think we can afford a new one. I had looked online and invoice is about $14,700 for a 1.8S model. He asked what the payment was we needed. I usually don't deal with a purchase this way, but told him about $200/month which I know is around $12K over 5 yrs. At that point I thought the conversation would end.

He then told me the following:
1. We are offering $2500 cash back of 1.9% financing on these vehicles.
Interesting. I figure I'll only get the $2500 back off MSRP but I ask:

"How much is invoice on the car"

He told me straight up invoice on the car I wanted (with road package, cruise control, better stereo, and leather wheel) was $15,061. He told me they ask $200 over invoice. I asked what their dealer fee was and what it included. That fee was another $200. I told him I'd only pay $100 over invoice, and I wanted the $2500 cash back with it.

He took it into the manager and I was all set. He also agreed to the deal if I financed through them and they would match any rate I could get. Sweet.

So, in the finance room I got 4.25% for 5 yrs (I could only get 4.5% from my credit union) and had them add a 72 month/75K miles bumper to bumper warranty. All for $254/month.

So, to sum this up:
2004 Nissan Sentra 1.8S with road package
MSRP = $16180
Paid:
Invoice = $15061+ $100 = $15161
Cash back = (-)2500 = $12661
Dealer Fee = +197
72 month/75K mile Warranty = $1000 ($18 more/month over 60 months)
Total financed = $13858

I'm pretty excited. Usually I pass on the warranty stuff, but with less time on my hands and the mileage we do I like the extra protection. I don't want a loan on a car with no warranty.

Pick it up on Friday. One thing I can't believe is we bought black. I swore I'd never own another black car, but even I had to agree with Heather on the looks. It just looked the best. We didn't want another silver car either.

Yeah, sorry things couldn't work out with your RS. I just didn't want a loan on a car that age with that many miles. Someone will buy it though. It's a sweet deal, just not the correct one for us with our commute and such.

Nice deal! Hopefully Heather can keep you from modding it. You can focus your energy on keeping it squeeky clean.

Congrats to another savvy shopper!

When I bought my Impy last April, the MSRP was $20.745 or some such, I told them I wanted it at invoice (this was at North End Subaru), and that I wanted to see the invoice and paperwork that goes along with it. The invoice was in the $19,000 range, but I knocked off the port fee and some other miscellaneous fees, and got the $750 off from Subaru on top of that. In the end, I paid in the $18,000 range and felt very happy. It's always so heartwarming to read about someone else's good fortune. Best of luck with your new car!

I just hope your new car, once you put 8K miles on it, doesn't feel like the cars at Merchants. Sometimes a good indication on how well a car will last or feel is looking at fleet vehicles... if they withstood Fleet 'abuse', then they have a good chance of withstanding personal driving. Not all fleet cars are ragged on either...

Good luck with it! Darshu will approve... Black Nissan.

My last car was a '98 Sentra SE, I bought it used right after college because of my friends '92 SER that I loved. It had the same SR20DE motor in it as my friends SER, did not handle as well, but much more refined, the thing was loaded. I loved that car! I used to drive it very hard (and autocross it), and it had very few problems. Sentra's can take a real beating over the years and still run very strong. I'm sure it will last a very long time. Good Luck!

Thats cool that Peters gave you a good deal, we got the Run around about 6 weeks ago on an Extera for the wife and the sales guys were dicks in my opinion, the whole experience made me decide to keep the Rodeo we have just because of their attitudes. The guy gave the whole speech that if you buy a car from me your not only getting a great car but I'll stick with you as long as you have the car, your comfort is all I care about, he never called 24 hours later with the financing numbers because he either got fired or quit, I thought it was funny. AutoFair was just as bad

We'll the fleet Nissan we drove had about 11K miles on it. It drove fine (except for the tire wobble, either a brake rotor or a flat spot on the tire from sitting I think). When I mean "beat up" it was just in poor condition for a 1 yr old car. It had a good size dent in the front bumper (almost through it), lots of scratches and door dings, and the interior plastic was pretty banged up. All typical "not my car, not worried about it" sort of stuff. Mechanically it felt really good.

Getting in the new model it just felt a bit more solid for some reason. New car smell, clean interior w/o coffee stains, doors seemed more solid, etc..

The fleet car didn't scare me off because I know how we both take care of cars. The used focus at 22K miles sure scared me off. I couldn't believe how poor that car felt with only 2-3 yrs worth of mileage. All the door handles were fading already or they just hit them all with wax? The brand new tires with only 22K was also strange.

Pittymk:
Sorry to hear about your experience. We delt with Steve Bowdin and Andrew the finance guy. Maybe because my car is a 2004 (the 2005 Sentras aren't on the lot yet) I had an easier time.

I did over hear a guy trying to buy something like an SUV. His payments were going to be over $500/month or something. I couldn't believe it.

Thanks everyone else. I'll get pictures up once I have it. We pick the car up tomorrow. Hopefully they won't run it through the car wash to "clean it" like IRA did with my Black WRX.

It better when I go get it. I actually haven't seen the model we purchased. Will tomorrow. I drove one w/o the road package. Purchased the road package model which wasn't on the lot, and it was also 9 PM by the time we were done with everything.

He said if I have any problems with the condition of the car I can just pick another one.

I'm actually considering asking them not to clean it, and to knock $75 off the dealer fee. I'm waiting for a call back from them (need the Vin number for insurance).

If it's really bad I just won't except it. They have a bunch of them, as do other dealers. When I purchased my WRX it was one of maybe 3 Black wagons and the only one with a 5-speed, so I sort of had to take it.

And Nate:
I'm going to check the VIN numbers on every piece of paperwork before I leave.
