I bought some filters and crush washers at the dealer during my one month service.

I buy Amsoil once a year and they mail it to me (for my car, and my wifes Nissan Rogue).

I've since installed a Fumoto valve, so I don't need crush washers anymore.

When I need filters, I will probably buy OEM filters off ebay.

+1 walmart for oil, fyi its cheaper to buy it from walmart website then choose site to store option. The in store prices sometimes are higher, online its generally 24. I buy 6 jugs at a time generally

crush washer and oil filter I buy from the online dealer stores, cheaper than going to the dealers most days. 6 at a time

motul 300 and 5.1, I buy from edo performance or azpinstalls or whomever has it cheaper at the time. I buy a large case so its a once every 2 years purchase.

where do you guys buy amsoil from? do I actually need to use this or can I use some other brand of synthetic 0w20? all this talk of overfilling is making me want to just do this service myself since it's pretty easy.

I'd suggest the Castrol 0w20 from wallyworld.

SOA wouldn't deny warranty work for using something other than amsoil right? I would assume from your experiences you would know

Mobil1 0w20 - Walmart usually has the best price on the 5qt jug.

Purolator PureOne PL14459 - Either Pep Boys or Advanced Auto.

Subaru has their own 0W-20 oil. You can use any brand of oil for the warranty purposes.

Amsoil is not required, though I think it is the best, so I use it.

I've seen mention of that. I find it kind of hard to believe that a car could be that sensitive to a specific brand of oil. I've always thought Mobil1 was a pretty respected brand. In the past (not on this car) I've generally used Mobil1 or Castrol. I've also used quakerstate a few times. I don't recall every noticing an issue but again - not with this car.

^Yeah, I haven't had an experience with it either so I can't say. Just thought I would pass it along to others who may be considering it

She never explained why M1 isn't suitable for our cars. Most of her anecdotal evidence came from EJ motors, which she said were run dry. No oil can do its job if it isn't there.

I've posted my consumption rate with M1 0w20 and I'll have an oil analysis up soon. Let's get some data before we trash an entire brand.

so you did an oil analysis with the subaru oil and now you are doing one with mobil1? It will be interesting to see the results.

I just had my first oil change at my dealer as it was free. They put a Mobil sticker on my window. I hope this wouldn't mean they used Mobil 1 oil, right?

I haven't had a car that used crush washers before. That's good to know. The Fumoto valve looks really convenient, especially the one with the hose attachment as the wind always seems to blow right when I pull the oil plug. They look kinda scary though. Do these ever accidentally open up?

Also, why Subaru brand filter?

I'd use it just to remove any question when it comes to a warranty claim. After the warranty period I'd say just use whatever you want.

The Service counter lady who says not to use Mobil1 had to look up how much oil a 2012 impreza holds. She didn't believe me when I said 5.3, and the tech swore it was six quarts.
I have no reason to doubt M1 products. I've used them before with no ill effects on bikes and cars.
But that's why I suggested the Castrol. Mobil1 seems to have developed a stigma.

There's nothing scary about the valve. It's locked closed by a spring. I suppose on some engines, if it sticks out too far it could be ripped off by road junk, but this isn't the case for our cars. It's hidden completely above the belly pan.

Plus I'm sure its easier for Subaru to say "mobil1 killed your motor" than "sorry your new car has a blown egine at less than 100k".

There are laws protecting the owner from this kind of thing.

So what size Fumoto valve for the 2012 Impreza 2.0? Fumoto's website indicates it's the F105. QuickValve.com is giving me the F108 when I enter my vehicle. Is there a better dealer?

Lol I don't even have one, but from this forum, I can tell you you want 108.
