Default Are used slicks a good idea? Pics**

someone is offering me Continental Extreme Contact DR 225/45/17
Claims 80% tread / 2 heat cycles
wants $300

Thinking of using it for autocross next year (cheaper than new RS-3, don't care about class to be honest)

If they only have 2 heat cycles, grab them up. Will have more grip that the RS-3, but not sure they'd be as sticky as something like a Hoosier A6.

Extreme Contact DR ????

those are actually take offs from a Continental Tire Grand Am series car and are made by Hoosier ...

for all practical purposes they are Continental branded Hoosier R6's

That's what they say on the sidewalls. Yes, they're rebranded Hoosiers, but the tires are marked as Extreme Contact DRs.

yes ... I looked into that further as initially many thought the "DR" naming would create confusion as they are not 'drag radials' ...

the "DR" is meant to signify "Dry Race" and yes they are made by Hoosier ... good tires !

Is there an allowance for non-DOT tires in autocross?

I wouldn't use these tires for auto-x. You'll be very disappointed. You wouldn't be able to get enough heat in them to get them up to temp on a short auto-x course. You'll get more heat in the RS-3 faster then these tires.

These tires are are build for road racing and I would get them for practices or as back up tires if you do track days or club racing.

If they are re-branded R6's then they are DOT tires.

I doubt you'd be able to run those in any DOT tire class unless people were very lax with the rules. They may be rebranded in some way, but they don't seem to have the two tread bands an R6 has and I doubt they are DOT certified.

You could run in Prepared. No DOT requirement in that category.

You are right about this. This is kind of stupid as the compound are the same except that it doesn't have the 2 grooves.

A friend of mine has a brand new set of these exact continentals (though a good bit wider) that still have the 'not for highway use' tag on them. Also, I don't think they are an exact copy of the R6 - at least they don't seem to have the DOT approval tied to them (no grooves either.) He picked them up on clearance last year at the end of the Grand Am season.

Lots of info on this tire here: http://www.nasaforums.com/viewtopic....f3a62c#p364662

There are a variety of online vendors that sell Continental / Grand Am scrubs. Their ads specifically state that they are not DOT approved.

I'm about to pick up a set (or maybe two sets) of 275/35-18s for track duty on my CTS-V.
