Default AC pulley question

It appears that the pulley on my AC is dying, the belt is burning. Now I have 2 questions:

How will taking my AC belt off and leaving it off until spring effect things? Most importantly the defroster (my mechanic said it will still work well enough) and if doing that will negatively effect anything else?

Also if I can replace the pulley as apposed to the whole unit, I dont want to have to recharge the system nor pay the high price of the unit whole lol
