**I KNOW IT'S A BIT OF A READ BUT HELP WOULD REALLY BE APPRECIATED**
![]() Second gear finally blew in my bugeye a few weeks ago (~86k miles). I looked around on Craigslist and found a guy selling a tranny. He said it was a JDM Impreza WRX tranny, 02-04 and had 40-50k miles. He bought a JDM engine for his Subaru on eBay and it came with the tranny, which he never used. I believe he kept it as a backup. He wanted $400 and I got it. He was a retired man, had two garages filled with cars, and knew what he was talking about. I could tell he was an honest and genuine person. However, the next day, I typed the code on the side of the tranny into google, and I was confused. All of the pages that came up said the tranny is from a 99-00 JDM Subaru Forester Turbo. I called the guy up and he was confused as well. We talked for a bit and he told me if things didn't work out, he'll give me the 400 back and I'll give him the tranny back. I blame nothing on him. Anyway, since I'm in this position now, and the guys house is an hour and a half away, I figured I'd see what I can do. The tranny looks real clean and seems to operate fine. Since I'm already in this position, what do you guys think about swapping in the 99-00 JDM Forester tranny? I'm not sure if I'll have to swap the rear diff, axles, hubs, etc.. The original reason of buying the "JDM 02-04 WRX tranny" was budget. I could throw it in my car without having to swap numerous other parts as well, and I'd be saving $ on parts/labor. Is the tranny even strong and durable(unlike the bugeye glass boxes)? Would it be benefitial swapping that in my car? Maybe I lucked out on this and got a good deal on the mistake? ![]() these labels were on the tranny: ty755vb1aa 334566 Help would be greatly appreciated. Should I just give him the tranny back and get my 400? Should I keep this and put it in? Side question...why is it that when I type "ty755vb1aa" into google, %75 of the pages are Russian? ![]() Thanks for taking the time to read and hopefully some of you are able to help me out! ![]() (The tranny i bought has a 4.444 FD. My stock tranny has 3.900 FD)

so if the final drive is different then that would probably mean you need a matching rear diff to go with that tranny...just saying. lol.

Lol I know I'd need the rear diff. Not sure how easily I'll come across one though. I'll contact a few shops and look around on the WTS section and see if they have the 4.444. Aaron, what should I be checking with the plugs?
Thanks for the replies ![]() _____________ Bumping for more answers. |

Not a lot to add that is helpful, but there is a huge Forester community in Russia. Some of those guys are doing some nice things with their Foresters, that's probably why you saw so many Russian sites.

Sorry I haven't replied. I'm on Long Island, NY and we got messed up from Hurricane Sandy. Car is safe though
. I've had no power since the hurricane, and probably won't have power for atleast a week. I'm at a friends house right now using his wifi. I don't want anyone thinking I was being rude by ditching my thread lol. Thanks for the replies fuji k and nepbug. I'll look up which subaru's have the 4.444 r160. so there should be no problem taking it from another subaru and throwing it in mine. nepburg, that seems to explain to whole russian thing lol. it was bugging me out, but that seems to make sense. thanks. bumping for more info. sorry for any late replies. hopefully my area gets fixed up soon. i'll do the best i can do. |

You can also get one off the newer turbo foresters.
On a side note, I have a WRX transmission that I'm putting in my forester and just picked up a wrx rear end to match. Good luck! |
