The funny thing is I have not driven an Sti either This is going to be my DD. I know the Sti will be a blast but the S4 really impressed me hence the thread title....I have two months until I order one or the other

grab a piece of paper, go on rockauto.com and look up an Audi. Write down the prices for normal things that may be replaced over time- starter, alternator, brake pads, valve cover gaskets, etc. Now look up the same items on a similar Subaru. If that difference isn't worth the extra leather in between your @$$ and the ground, get a Subaru.

Also, everyone knows of someone who had an s4 (or other Audi) that spent most of its time in the shop getting fixed. If that happens to a Subaru, we call it a lemon. Most of the issues with Subarus are after all the modifications that we do to them. Look at a 100k mile A4 from underneath and count how many different fluids you can see starting to seep out of everywhere. I have had 3 subarus with 200+k miles and can say that yes, the valve cover gaskets leak eventually, just like any other car. I have never had to replace things that should last IMO. Door latches, abs pumps, fuel pumps, compressors, instrument clusters, etc. And when I do have to go buy parts, the aren't priced like they are made out of gold. (example- I was fixing an a6 transmission leak where the wiring harness goes through the lower part of the transmission pan (under the fluid level :stupid and needed the 2 O-rings that sealed it. I went to the local Audi dealership to get them and with my discount (I have a dealership) they wanted $18 each for them!! These were just a little bit bigger than a quarter, round, run of the mill, O-rings, for $18, each... I went to O'reillys and they gave them to me for free.)

The Germans make many great things, but the Audis are the worst cars to come out of that country. I would rather drive a Benz or a BMW. Get me an E55 AMG or an E39 M5 and I would be happy. Hell, if you can find one, Get the E55 AMG estate. There is nothing as cool as a 4300 lb station wagon that has a backwards facing rear seat for your kids and can run a 12.4 second 1/4 on street tires IMO

Those are some pretty universal items though.
German cars are great, dont get me wrong. Its just when they break, they cost a lot to fix because there isnt as much competition for parts.

I also agree with the MSRP and taxes but the Sti will cost more for me to insure than the S4.

Ahhhh gotcha. I drove my buddies 05 with a catback and a short shifter and it was a slug compared to my stage 2 WRX. Just felt heavy, and well underpowered. Not quite sure about the new ones...

What's the hp rating and 1/4 time? Just curious.

Well, I took it upon myself to look up power specs on the 2012/13 S4 and I'm not really impressed lol. V6 supercharged with 333/325. Looks like it lost weight coming in at around 3800 lbs from other gen's but still, I'm unimpressed by the numbers. Just my opinion.

In all actuality, it isn't a far cry from my buddies 05 at 340/302 at almost 3900 lbs. These cars are nice, but they're straight tanks lol.

I test drove one and it was a game changer for me. If I had never test driven one this would be a no brainer, Sti all the way. They are underrated from the factory. The V6 3.0T is putting down about 320 at the wheels stock, so around 360 at the crank is a reasonable assumption.

Well it's Quattro, so if they're putting down 320 at the wheels, I'd say more like 380+ crank hp. Still, my WRX was leaps and bounds more nimble. Every car is different though.

don't get me wrong, it's a beautiful, powerful car, but I'd rather have my WRX at a power standpoint. It doesn't cost an arm/leg to mod it lol. Interior, sound (stereo, nothing beats a boxer rumble and I'm not even suby bias ), looks, audi all day.

They call it the V6 3.0T (even have V6T badges on the front fenders) but yeah it's actually supercharged. The engine is also TFSI.

That's strange... I wonder why they would do that.

Could have easily had V6SC badges or something.

This^ kind of like false advertisement because its probably the same badging for all the 2.0t powered cars with actual turbos...strange

Nice. Interested in hearing your thoughts as an ex-Subaru owner.

S4's are no slouches, with the equivalent of a stage 2 with pulleys, they are capable of mid to low 12s... perhaps someone who owns one will chime in.

i looked at the new S4s for a while. I didn't buy one because (some may hate on me for the first one, but seriously, in order)

1) All of the black ones have stupid chrome side mirrors.

2) They're pretty heavy .. the wrx is already heavy enough, lighter is better for me, to a point

3) I could use that $ to spend on other stuff instead .. while still enjoying a fairly nice daily driver.

4) I'm allergic to service departments. Reliability is a crap shoot, but un-reliability is not worth my time.

(again, hate is understandable here) I didn't buy the STI sedan solely because of .. that wing .. the extra $ wasn't quite as big of a deal as I think the STI is still really good bang for the buck for a sick DD (so is the WRX). I could have found someone to swap trunks but .. meh. I probably should have though.. maybe next time

Haha, this is a "trademark" design feature for the S models. Hell, some people with A4's buy the chrome mirror caps and put them on (like WRX owners put STi wings on).

Yeah, no argument there. But it's not like it's supposed to be a lightweight sports car. It's a luxury sports sedan.

You can make a nice car fast, but you can't make a fast car nice. You can spend all the money you want on the Subaru but its interior will still be garbage.

Meh, the recent Audis don't seem to have the problems that plague the 90's to early 2000's Audis. We have an 05 A6 that's right around 70,000 miles and it's been routine maintenance 90% of the time.

Audi parts are more expensive, but it's kind of part of the price of the car. If you can't afford to maintain an Audi, you can't really afford an Audi.

I'm with you. The WRX is a killer DD.

That being said, if I had the $$$ to buy a new S4 AND maintain it for the next 6-8 years (especially out of warranty), I would buy it over any Subaru in a heartbeat. Different leagues of cars.

I agree. Problem for me is that it would look bad if I parked a new S4 in front of my school each day when the taxpayers are always complaining about salary increases for teachers (as if we're overpaid ). I can get away with parking a new Subaru there because, well, it's just a Subaru.

I have had my fxt for 8 years now and it's been great. It is deceptively fast as stage 2 also. The 2014 forester XT looks very promising, 2.0 turbo with direct injection and some other goodies. I am just ready for a change and have wanted a S4 since 2006.

arent you comparing a 45k car to a 65k car.....thats not really comparing apples to apples. with that being said i have driven 2 newer s4's. one 2010 and one 2012 and havent exactly been "impressed" by either of the two. dont get me wrong theyre incredible machines but nothing exactly stood out
