Post Subaru factories backlogged; potential delivery delays

Estimated 4-month wait on new orders for Impreza, Crosstrek, WRX/STI; 3 months for Outback, Legacy, Tribeca; No Forester orders until the new model arrives. Subaru had better do all it can to ramp up quickly.

From cars101:

Quote:
10/25 Factory Orders- Subaru fesses up, announces that ordered cars are going to take longer and longer to arrive.
With Subaru riding a wave of popularity and cars selling quickly, there's been a shortage of cars available on lots for a while now. This is especially true of the Japanese built Impreza, Crosstrek, BRZ and WRX/STI. This is a good/bad problem. The good part is Subarus are selling. Once known as a mostly functional car for skiers, hippies, campers and dog lovers etc in the northeast, northwest, rocky mountains and other frosty, wet areas, and widely unknown everyplace else, Subarus are now the It Car and selling everywhere. Even where it's warm and dry all year round.
As a result of the reduced inventory on lots, more and more people are either putting deposits down on already scheduled incoming cars, or are factory ordering if what they want isn't on the horizon.
This even further reduces the number of cars available on lots because more arrivals are pre-sold and spoken for. And with Subaru trying to expand into every market, they now have a whopping total of 1,209 possible model, trim and color combinations and that doesn't even include individual options.
As a result of the increase in orders, the ETA (estimated time of arrival) of factory ordered cars is getting pushed back. This is the bad part. Its like your favorite neighborhood restaurant getting a glowing review, all of a sudden it's 'discovered' (like it hasn't been there for years and years), and there's a line to get in on weekends. Then reservations are recommended, then required, then its 4 weeks out to get in and so on. Meet Subaru, the little car company showing everyone how to make consumers fall in love with a car.
Previously orders usually took 6-10 weeks. Now Subaru has announced a longer wait time for orders. These ETAs are not fixed. They're are a guide as to how long the wait could be. Of course some cars will arrive sooner and others later but it can take months for a car just to be matched to the order and a future ETA released.
how can Subaru possibly have 1,209 models?
Impreza- there are 189 possible Impreza model, trim and color combinations.
Crosstrek- there are 48 possible Crosstrek model, trim and color combinations
WRX/STI- there are 96 possible WRX and STI model, trim and color combinations
Forester- there are 136 possible Forester model, trim and color combinations
Outback- there are 448 possible Outback model, trim and color combinations, including PZEVs
Legacy- there are 240 possible Legacy model, trim and color combinations, including PZEVs
Tribeca- there are 24 possible Tribeca model, trim and color combinations
BRZ- here are 28 possible BRZ model, trim and color combinations

> according to Subaru if you order a
Impreza, the ETA will be around 4 months starting with the next full month after you order.
Crosstrek, the ETA will be around 4 months starting with the next full month after you order.
WRX/STI, the ETA will be around 4 months starting with the next full month after you order.
Forester, the ETA will be around - oops.. no orders accepted. The redesigned 2014 is expected late winter/spring.
Outback, the ETA will be around 3 months starting with the next full month after you order.
Legacy, the ETA will be around 3 months starting with the next full month after you order.
Tribeca, the ETA will be around 3 months starting with the next full month after you order (is anyone ordering a Tribeca).
BRZ, due to the way BRZs are allocated, the ETA is estimated to be 4-7 months out, but Subaru will back-fill as model and color is available. There's no ETA until shortly before the car arrives.

people who want the brz but dont want to wait could easily get the fr-s. i do wonder a bit about the quality control of things for subaru if they are rushing to fill these orders.

Good for Subaru, bad for us.

I need to make up mind so I can order a new car... Sounds like if I want a new car for springtime I should order in November?

What is good for Subaru can only be good for their enthusiasts.

Might be easier to pick from dealer allocations before they arrive, than to order. In which case, big dealerships = advantage.

Everything's sold months out. The moment allocations are known, they get sold. Also, orders come out of allocations now, I believe.

I'm glad that I'm not in the market to buy anything soon, but I can imagine the price markups....

I am waiting for the 2014 Forester. Hopefully they are readily available for test drives and purchase. If not, I may lean the other direction and get a C-MAX.

I would wait for the Forester. Living in upstate NY I would think you would benefit from AWD and ground clearance.

Both AWD and ground clearance would be useful. The C-MAX would just allow me cut my fuel costs in half. Though my driveway slopes up right at the curb, and I am not sure a normal low sitting car would get up without scraping the bottom of the bumper.

If you are going the hybrid route I would go with Toyota. They have been doing it for over a decade. I just recently bought a Prius C and couldnt be happier. Even though its rated at 46hwy and 53 city I routinely get higher than that. I paid 23,000 after options/accessories. If you want something bigger look into the "V" model.

I think subaru's hybrid will be just fine! They have been working in the technology for a long time and they typically won't release a product that isn't well sorted. They are an engineering company after all.

I am sure they could skate quality and speed up production. I think they are going as fast as they can while keeping the quality.

And getting/got help from Toyota.

Key statement there.

have you talked to some of the STi owners? ask about their seals. also, the 2008 wrx was a waste.

The C-MAX is Prius V sized, but is a touch cheaper and gets better fuel economy.

Ford wants you to think the C-MAX is V-sized. The V is quite a bit larger.

The 2008 wasn't a waste. Subaru tried to deliver a more "Touring" like car at the WRX level leaving the aggressiveness to the STI, it wasn't received well, they adapted, produced a better car in 2009 and by 2011 it had evolved into a pretty good car. My wife and I have owned all three.

Some think the next generation might follow a similar path.

the cmax has a MUCH better interior/sitting position and fun to drive/road handling than any of the priuii.

........i just think that the 2008 model could have been skipped. they should have gone from 2007 model to the 2009 model. and i do agree that the wrx has beautifully evolved not into a "pretty good car" but a great car for its price range and class. what is it's competition? the ralliart? and i am quite certain this is much much better.
