Default 2012+ Weight Distribution

CURB WEIGHT (F/R DIST)

•Hatchback. •Sedan
2908 lb (59/41%) 3056 lb (60/40%)

Let's discuss smart ways to both lower the curb weight of these cars, and/or get that distribution closer to 50/50.

• Remove rear seats
• Replace front seats with recaro buckets or similar
• Move battery to trunk
• Carbon-Fiber hood ($$$$$)

Any other thoughts?

To what end would you do this?

And the back seats aren't THAT heavy. The seat pad is super light and even the seat backs, while being somewhat a PITA to take out, aren't as well.

If trying to lower the weight I'd first take the spare tire out, not huge weight but easy as it'll get..

What is the purpose for you wanting to get to 50/50 weight distribution and lower curb weight?

Are you looking to hyper mile it? Autocross? Knowing this might help.

As for ways to reduce weight, lighter wheels would be a good spot to start.

Horsepower-to-weight ratio.

Right now we're at about 1hp per 19-20 lbs.

If we can't produce more output from these engines (inexpensively), then how about attacking it from the other angle?

We get the weight down by a few hundred pounds and that 148hp will be more adequate. 1hp per 16-17lbs

STI swap.

Honestly, with the new STI out, I'm wondering who will be the first to try that swap out with a '12 Impreza Sport 5MT. I'm sure someone has thought about it considering the latch of the hatch.

I have heard a lot of people say that 100+ pounds off a car makes a noticeable though small difference on the track but sometimes 300+ off a car on the road is hardly noticeable. So if you frequently go to tracks, autox, drag strips ect then go for it. But the thing is recaros and cf hoods are very expensive and provide little weight reduction. Light weight batteries are a decent value in comparison being that they shed around 35+ pounds (depending on what battery you have) and are around $150. Personally I would not do any of these things. In your position I would sell what you have now and buy a wrx or sti. Just my 2 cents.

Why are we trying to reduce weight on a car that weighs about as much as a chihuahua to begin with? This is just stupid. And why would you buy a CVT if you want it to be faster??? This thread makes no sense.

Also, do you realize that weigh distribution isn't the same thing as total weight?

In order:

See above. Then don't post in it. Because I didn't want to wait 3 months, and they gave me a good deal. Yes it does, unless you're a bit of an idiot. Also, yes I do realize that. We are talking about both. Full retard

Ripping stuff out of the rear would NOT help with the weight distribution, and the biggest thing hurting it is the engine sitting in front of the front axle.

There's a guy on reddit who is swapping a '13 STI motor into his GP. Someone posted the link in the 2012 Impreza thread.

But it would help with overall weight.

I doubt it will be noticeable, I will do this to my car in about 5 years but I'll put that weight back on with the roll cage. If not adding more, anyway, it will be a nice car for getting into rallycross/autocross. Not enough power to kill you but enough to have fun.

Why would you want to do that to your car?

So inconvenient to have the battery re-wired with cables running all the way back to your car.

Removing rear seats? Why not just buy a 2 seater car in the first place?

Nobody here ever said they wanted to do any of these things to their car. This is an ideas thread.

Lightweight = good
50/50 balance = good

I'm personally looking for unique ideas on how to make unobtrusive changes to my car to improve one or both metrics (curb weight or balance). Unfortunately, the membership here is full of flaming water-headed children with poor English comprehension skills.

Add 400 lbs or so to the rear. This is where you make a "your mom" joke.

Taking out the engine is a good idea too.

I think this graphic is an apt description of some of the membership here...

From what I remember, the service manual has the sedan and hatch weighing the same down to the pound. Weight does vary with trim level.

Unless you no longer need the car for street duty, weight reduction is probably a lost cause. A lot of the weight is critical (drivetrain) and the interior components are light.

Okay, while I'm waiting for the chicken to bake......here's your weight chart from the service manual. Like Commander said, sedan and hatch are the same. Some had two different weights listed because of the sunroof option. The second and third group of numbers are front/rear weight.

What's odd: I don't know what Prem+ is and the manual shows the sport limited with a MT
