I stumbled across this If anyone is looking for a semi pre made iPad mini mount. Should be able to make something work with our radio bezel, and it'd save a lot of time.

Are there no heat-related issues having it all enclosed?

Go for it! Lot of work, but worth it!

I've had none so far. I've used the heater in the winter for a 5 hour road trip with the mini as my navigation with Waze and playing music from Pandora.

iPad mini custom mount for car and home from Fifield Fabrications - YouTube
Has anyone attempted using this yet? I really want to try it but know absolutely nothing about fabrication or where to start when trying to form it to fit my dash.

You can probably get it done cheap by a plastic fabricator since you already have created the template which is some of the most expensive part

Cool vid!!!
Always wanted to do this in my '04 Outback!! Probably going to go with an OG iPad though, since it fits right in the main cutout. Although your idea with the plug and the magnets might be a better method, because then I could slide it in and out when I wanted to take it out when I'm in a bad part of town to retain that OEM look, and maybe even recess the A/C and radio controls behind it. I know it might not apply to my car, but how much free space was there behind your dashboard? About how far could the head unit possibly be pushed towards the firewall from the stock position? Was it especially hard getting everything to fit?

Thanks

Wish the best of luck to you on your install! The radio is recessed about 1.25" back from the stock location, space was very tight and my radio and it's wires JUST fit. It wasn't too hard to get everything to fit, lots of room for me underneath the radio to put all the wires.

This is an awesome job, but major question, how is it connected to the car to get RPM's etc? Can't simply be USB to the back of the radio can it?

Either a wifi or Bluetooth OBDII dongle. You can get them for like 30 bucks on flea bay or amazon.

Awesome, and there is an OBD2 connection in the dash? Or is the WiFi/BT connector just plugged into the one under the steering column? Thanks.

The OBD2 connection port I used for my WiFi dongle to transmit the information to the iPad is under the steering column.

What's the advantage of this over the AppRadios with ARLiberator?

I looked into doing both, and decided on the AppRadio with ARL route.

I like android and all of it's potential.

Go to ARLibertor forums and look at the possibilities....it's endless.

I am going to be running a dedicated device for my AR2, just to cut down on connection hassle. And I will be able to create a complete "Auto" profile on that dedicated device, instead of trying to make it work as both auto and phone.

They are both solutions to the problem of "Why the hell won't a HU manufacturer build what we want?" It has frustrated me to no end. So now when I see someone looking for what took me two years to figure out, I try to point them in either direction.

I also wanted to be able to run Torque Pro (check this out if you haven't already.)

I ended up having to buy a $200 adapter to make it work with my JDM ECU, but I'm almost there and couldn't be happier.

I do own an Ipad 4 so I'm not entirely android biased. You just need to find out what solution works best for you and decide what you actually want out of the end product.

Just wanted to say great job on the iPad install. I want to do the same thing but am thinking about keeping the stock radio. You think that you could mount the iPad in front of the stock radio or would it stick out too much and look weird? I know you would have to clear the volume buttons. Just wondering what you think.
