Buying tires - Your opinions Welcome!
i have a problem. I am currently buiilding a 71 plymouth roadrunner as a pro-touring car, and I will be driving it from spring to fall with some autox days in between. I have the 17"rims but now I'm looking for some rubber to put on them. Problem is normally high performance tires are great in the summer but lack any grip the minute it gets a bit cold outside. I live in southern, alberta, canada and its dry most of the year, but the tempertures still dip down to the freezing mark in spring/fall. I've noticed that they do make UHP all season tires but they have UTQ ratings of over 400, which makes me wonder just how well they would do on a autox circuit. Down the road I'll buy another set of rims for track days, but for now I just don't have the cash. Seeing how this is one of the biggest forums on the net, I though maybe some of you can provide some feedback on tires they used for similar use.
In the past I have tried nitto neogens which are great for the price but lack on sizes. Falken Azenis are garbage the minute it gets slightly chilly. The Kumho Ecstas XS were great this summer but i wouldn't trust them in the cold. I'm currently looking at a 26" tire either 245/245 or 275/40.

Go for summer tires and do not drive in near freezing temperatures. You will not be competetive using AS tires, unless it is wet and everybody has dry summer tires.
I enjoyed SP 5000 in all weather conditions but I have never had any autox in my life so I cannot help how they work on the track. Good luck with your choice. Krzys |
