2012 WRX upgrading to 18" rims
As from my previous posts, I'm pretty new to car modding and reading through 2000+ posts in the wheel/tires stickies I just don't have time for and I'm sorry. But this should be a relatively simple question and answer, I hope!
As indicated in the title I have a 2012 WRX 4-door which comes with 235/45R-17 tires/rims stock. I just bought a set of winter tires to fit these stock rims and would like to buy 18" rims and new summer tires so that I dont have to switch between tires/rims twice a year when winter comes and passes (costs about $100 each time to have that swap done). So, since I'm a complete noob with rim sizes and what fits/doesnt fit or what problems could or could not arrise...that's why I'm here. Looking at tirerack, I see a lot of 18" rims which are size 235/40-18. Now I'm smart enough to realize the 18 is for the rim size, but the size difference between stock and 18" looks to be in the second number (40) as opposed to 45 on the stock rims. What is the 2nd number and will this work for my car? I'm guessing since I'm looking at rims on the website that "fit my car" according to the search criteria, I'm ok with this size. All bolt patterns look to be 5-100, no idea what that number means but again, I assume thats fine. What about offset? I see some rims are 45, 48, 50mm+. What should I be looking for with regards to offset? Or backspacing? I'm trying to be simple and just find something that works without causing problems and be able to upgrade from 17's to 18's. I guess something as close to stock as possible but having them be 18's instead of 17's is my goal, to have that nice look of aftermarket 18's during the summer months. Any help is appreciated and I apologize because I'm sure this information is available in one of the sticky threads but I havent seen much about 2012's. Thanks much

Looks like I need to worry about the TPMS too. Do I need a new system if I get a different set of rims, too? So that I have the TPMS on both sets of rims or what? Why must this be so confusing.

Start Reading! And just for the basics...235/45/17 is a tire size. 235 is the tire witdth, 45 is how tall and 17 is the diameter. as far as wheels go 17 is the diameter x 8 is the wheel width. And offset as best as I can explain is where the face of the wheel sits inside the wheel. Lower the offest number is the more lip or concave the wheel will be. |

I wouldn't call 18's an "upgrade".
Tire measurements look like this: Section width/sidewall height (as a percentage of section width)/wheel diameter. What tire fits on the wheel really depends on what wheel you want (width and offset mostly). Figure out the wheels, then worry about tires. |

Well considering I don't want to go 19" or higher, I would say its an upgrade. Plus, an inch larger and non-stock rims of my choice I would consider an upgrade in looks! But thank you for the information. My plan was to already figure out the wheels and make sure those are solid THEN find tires to fit them, so thanks for at least confirming that for me too
DurtyB: Thanks for linking that thread! I'll read through that and hopefully that's all I'll need |

Check out the offset + wheel/tire fitment stickies. There's tons of info that should help you. |
