Default Montana Residents & Sales Tax

I have a question and google cannot answer it. So I'd figure the Montanans could. Seeing how Montana does not have a sales tax on goods, do Montana residents have to pay a sales tax when they shop in another state?

I assume they would, Seeing the no-sales tax is only in Montana for Montana citizens. Even though you're from a different state, you have to abide by the laws of the state you in I wouldn't see how sale tax is any different.

I had a customer come in today arguing they are from Montana so they don't have to pay the sales tax in IL (It was $3) I simply said "Yes you do, seeing as your purchasing goods in IL, if you were ordering them online then no you wouldn't you would pay shipping)

CN: Do montana residents pay sales taxes in states they shop in.

Washington has an agreement with Oregon, Montana, and Alaska that they do not need to pay sales tax in Washington. Not sure what other states do this.

I dont know how it all works but i usually pay sales tax whenever i am in another state. If i am purchasing something in another state you have to go by there rules i guess. I have heard some people can buy cars in other states and not have to pay sales tax. Sorry i cannot give you a straight answer on this. I have heard we dont have to but seriously it is not worth the hassle of arguing over a couple cents or dollars. Only way i would bicker over it or try it would be on a large purchase like a car.

Yup. It is a state courtesy (in WA) to allow citizens of others states to waive the sales tax. HOWEVER, it is up to the store to abide by this, most stores do but some don't.

i know that when i order parts online i don't have to pay any tax.

if you were to come to montana and buy something you wouldn't have to pay sales tax so i would assume that if i were to go to illinois i would have to pay.

Hm, seems like it was just an in-bred family that doesn't know anything.

Looking into it further it appears it is up to the store to honor their no-tax or not, but when purchasing goods in person i don't see how they should be exempt just because of their residency is in a somewhat "tax-free" state.

oh well, thanks for your help.

I live in Montana. I bought my car in Denver and did not pay tax. I pay tax for normal things when I'm in other states. I sell cars and out of state buyers pay tax when they register the cars they buy from me.
