Default Places to eat, things to see/do in Austin

Hey, guys. I'll be in Austin for the Formula 1 race and I'm looking for some recommendations on where to eat, places to see, and things to do. As far as restaurants go, I like places that have obnoxiously large portions and/or interesting and different menu items. Who's got the best BBQ for the money? What about Tex-Mex? Plus I'm always searching for the perfect chocolate chip cookie and ice cream. What are some of the must see attractions? Just trying to see what fellow car guys might recommend. Thanks!

6th street is good for entertainment, Breakfast or lunch is pretty good at Franks (on 4th somewhere), in my opinion. Dinner at Moonshines is a must, in my opinion, fantastic food!

...That's about all I know, sorry.

If you want some music and entertainment, check out the big concerts that they are hosting downtown for Formula 1.

The salt lick has the best BBQ. It's in round rock but its worth the drive.

If you want kitzchy Mexi-Amer-Austin food and like queso go to Torchy's. The best BBQ will be impossible to get as they sell out by 1:00 pm (this is Franklin's). Slat Lick is OK.
If you like doughnuts hit up Gourdoughs in downtown.

Amy's ice cream is probably the best in the city. No really great bakeries that I've found down here for cookies, yet.

A must see is really a drive through the hill country at this time of year. McKinney State Falls are pretty (especially if we get some rain this week).

What part of town are you staying in. There are tons of great places to eat and fun things to do in Austin. However, your location and access to transportation could make a difference.

In my opinion:

1886 Bakery has the best desserts downtown.
Lamberts is the best BBQ downtown
Taverna has the best brunch downtown
24 Diner has the best breakfast. It's not exactly downtown, but close.

Franklins BBQ is getting national attention, but the wait is excruciating. You are likely not to going to get lunch unless you arrive around 10:00am. They don't open until 11:00am, and typically close around 1:00pm when they run out.

Threadgills is an Austin institution. Amazing Chicken Fried Steak, vegetable dishes and live music.

I refuse to recognize any Salt Lick location outside of Driftwood as the Salt Lick. The atmosphere is one of the things about the original Salt Lick that makes it so unique and special. If you can make it out to Driftwood I would also highly recommend it. Don't forget the Driftwood location is BYOB.

I'm planning on hitting Franklin's BBQ Thursday, then go check into my hotel. There is all manner of other **** going on, it's a crazy amount of stuff.

May go to J Mueller's instead, that's where Mr. Franklin learned how to BBQ.

I will agree the meat is well prepared and cooked, but the sauce and sides leave SO much to be desired. Rudy's is better and not as expensive.

I never make a trip to Austin without stopping here, amazing giant sandwiches with crazy combinations of ingredients. I love the Phat Buffalo, its a buffalo chicken sandwich with fried cheese sticks, french fries, bacon and ranch. fat people food

You have to almost be trying to eat bad in austin from my experience. Choose a place that is small and local and there is about a 99% chance it will be good. Planning stuff is hard and stuff.

Their is also one of TXICs favorites bone daddies. The food is mediocre and the place is a bit cheasy but the girls are quite easy on the eyes (and genitals In my estimation)

Looks like that didn't make any of the lists. Might give that a shot on Thursday.

"Lick" has the best ice cream (crazy flavors like spicey goat cheese which is delicious)

Torcheys tacos has great tacos obviously. Kirby Lane is always delicious and open late.

There's also the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center.

And don't forget to hit up the French Legation Museum.

WOW! So much fail in this one statement....

First, no one can say where the BEST BBQ is (maybe Franklin's) there are just good and better places.

Second, Round Rock? WTF? There is only one real Salt Lick, and it's in Driftwood, Southwest of town. All other locations are pretenders.

Personally, I'll be at Uncle Billy's on Barton Springs, drinking brew and loading up on habanero BBQ sauce. But if you want REALLY good BBQ, drive out to Llano (the scenic route of course) and hit up Cooper's.
