Default Restoration of a 96 LX, with Pics and small story

*Update Pics from this weekend (31AUG) on post 134!*
*Update Pics from this weekend (10AUG) on post 113!!!!!!!!
*Update Pics from this weekend (12JUL) on post 55!*
*Updated Pics from this weekend (29-31MAR) on post 44!*
*Updated Pics from this weekend (22MAR) on post 15!*

Ok, so here is the story.

Replaced the transmission last September, engine died 4 days later, lost my job a 3 days later.

Was out of work for a bit of time (100 days), at which time it sat at my parents house in Stanwood.

The interior is pretty torn up now, with mold and mildew in patches. Trunk had standing water in it, and right rear fender is going to have to be replaced.

Already, I am looking pretty hard for a 2.2 engine, RS front end (fog lights, head lamps, bumper), new wheels and tires (no more off roading for me ), removal of the decals and wing, and removal of everything inside the cabin except: dash, steering column, seats, and door cards.

I am going to remove everything from the inside. Headliner is questionable.

Now, as far as money is concerned, I am going to try and buy everything used, and just get this thing road worthy again.

For the restoration, does anyone have any helpful ideas, hints, or tips?

Anyone have a 2.2, rs front bumper, fogs, head lamps, wrx rims and tires, and other misc parts laying around?

Thanks guys, hopefully be back in full swing shortly!

Trevor

Good luck with the project. Hope to see you rolling again. I'll let you know if I hear about any deals on used stuff. I know that there is a junk yard on the north end of 99, you might want to start there. Might get lucky.

Would you be referencing Lynnwood's pull a part?

There is also Aaron's in Sea Tac area that I may check out here soon.

Hey I know of you, your car used to chill up by the burnt down white church in Stanwood. Good Luck with the project. How come no more off roading?

Yeah buddy! My parents live on the next road up from the burnt church.

It is out in the open right now, so yeah, work begins this weekend.

No more MAJOR off roading:

It is just way out of my price range to maintain it.

After I get this back on the road, I am going to save up and pay cash for a 2000 OBS. That will be my DD, and then, back to the LX, for some major re-mods. Then it will be either a weekend track car, or a weekend off roading car.

Only time and budget will tell.

Where at on Camano do you live?

I remember seeing those pics on the dirty impreza forums.

I live one the other side of the fence of the golf course... we get to see golfers on the fairway all day long. Its easy to find my place just look for the dark blue impreza with the golf ball dent on the roof. Oh yea and the cop shop is a stones throw away, oh well its tough in the streets. Are you still in Stanwood? I know a guy thats pretty good with body work if your interested?

I am interested. No I live in Redmond now, but I am up there pretty much every weekend.

Effin Golfers. I would go to the shack and say look what you have done to my car! I want repairs. But yeah.

Your body work guy, is he local up there?

LOL! Yeah, if I had the money for all supporting mods as well, then I will think about it.

After I get the OBS, then I will go for the major swap. Until then, stock 2.2 it is.

Thanks though!

Thanks for the reply guys!

Dash: Thank you, but I can clean mine up, and your in Oregon. I used to live in Reedsport, I know how far of a drive that is!

97 OBS: Thanks, but 200K is a bit much to just get by with. I found at Aaron's for less than 100K, they want 695, rebuilt. I don't want to spend 700 on an engine that is going to get replaced in the next few years, but, I may end up going that route.

Thanks everyone! Keep em coming!

Ok, had a semi productive weekend.

Removed the VTR vinyl (Sorry Wayne, it was time for a change, thank you again for the vinyl though!), removed the wing, got new wheels, and did some minor body work.

No more VTR vinyl:

No more wing, and the right rear fender is awaiting further work, but for now, progress has been made, and that is not my license plate you see :

A close up of the repairations. Used a 10 pound sledge hammer, 2 finishing hammers, a dual action sander, sand paper, and black primer. Still needs more work, but for now, it is not gonna rust:

An overall shot of the right side. I am going for another trunk, this one is patched with electrical tape, and the screws were rusted, so we had to drill out the stripped and rusted screws holding the wing on, resulting in a damaged trunk:

Front bumper to be replaced along with side markers, headlamps, foglamps, turn signals, and corner lights. Minor fix on the fender, may just get 2 new fenders:

And last but not least, Enkei rf-1 16x7 5x100 +38:

Test fitment shows they are just about flush with the fender. These with some nice all seasons will look awesome, and will fill up the wheel well nicely!

So, that's it until next weekend!

Tomorrow, picking up bumper, fogs, and stock airbox.
(Soon) $600 for a 2.2 with less than 100K on it shipped to a shop.
Looking for:

98-01 RS crystal clear headlamps, not decided on corner lights.

That cool red color side marker lights. Any one have any information?

I already have smoked turn signals, will use those until something better comes along.

JDM tails.

2 front fenders left and right.

Wingless trunk.

After that, a paint job, possible poly lip kit, and the exterior is done.

Next weekend... The interior.

Stay tuned!

Hahahaha, **** dude, I got all caught up in the car! I am sorry, my dad is coming down tomorrow so we can throw him on my bank account, I will MAKE SURE *sends email now* that he brings it, so Wednesday dude!

Wing is sitting in the garage with the wheels. If you know of anyone who wants it, let me know, not looking to get a whole hell of a lot for it, but something would be nice!

If I can get the front splitter sanded and painted then I won't have a problem with it!

I don't know yet though, let me get some more stuff on here first.

Pretty soon, I will be selling my entire seat set, including the rear folding seats...

The amber corner lights...

I just looked at them on some other peoples cars, and they just don't look right IMHO. So, I am going to go for clear corner lights, turn signals, and keep the crystal sides, until red ones can be found.

^yeah the splitters can be painted, I just like how it looks with my hella fog covers. It just needs to be sanded with some 600, then prepped, then duplicolor- nate did his hood scoop delete and it turned out fine.

If I dont get the zerosports wing I might slap that back on my car, I don't know... I'd paint it to match this time if I did.

shouldn't the ride be running before you pimp it?

My injection kit is sitting in my garage. Looking for a tank right now. I figured out where I want the tank located...just need to find one that will fit there.

Ahhhhh, well, you know, you aren't the first person to ask that!

Here is how I see it:

Save the engine for last, because when I swap it in over a weekend, I will be able to drive a near complete car home.

And plus, I don't want to go off roading again, and the temptation is much too great with those wheels and tires on there, so I take away the urge at it's source!

It's that, or get it running, and do all the work after then engine...

I have been out of a car for a few months, whats another month getting it all together as opposed to getting it going and taking it down for a weekend, rushing to get it back together, so on and so forth.

Plus, they were a good deal.

Where are you putting the tank?

Does this mean I can't have your powerplant?

Dude, teh rust = + 15 hp! Get it right! Gawd!!!

(in all fairness, no, its not for sale, its in the trash pile... Neither of those radiator fans work either, you want them?)

Supa Powaplant! FTW.

I like it.

I got to go for a ride in a very nice bugeye yesterday! It was a blast! I have never been in a super quick rex, and well, yeah, it blew my mind!

Where are you putting the tank? At least tell me its not in the trunk? What about the spare wheel well?
