Having done both the Porsche thing and the Subaru thing...get a 911...people who say they are a maintenance nightmare don't know what they're talking about. My dad had an 83 911 SC and all he ever had to do were oil changes and valve adjustments.

That being said...buy AS MUCH Porsche as you can afford...as in...don't buy a cheap one needing work. Buy the nicest 964 you can find, and just keep it up...you won't be sorry!

(964 C2 is also my dream car)

Your dad is either super lucky and hasnt had to deal with his CIS or hes already converted to carbs or efi, lol

I think the maintenance nightmare thing comes from people that have the lust for wanting to own a porsche 911 and not the love with dealing german over engineering 30+ years ago, lol. I can vouch for it, was offered a great deal by the previous owner of mine with great records but, diddnt have a ppi done on the car. If i were to do it over again the only thing i wouldve done differently would have been to have a ppi and hold out for a coupe instead of the targa i go. That being said though with all the fixing and learning with my car i dont know if i could ever get rid of it where as all my wrx's and other subaru's it was reeeeeeeal easy to give up with the exception of my first wrx (only because i put a rediculous amount of money into it).

Without sounding like a vag there is just something about owning a classic (not necessarily a porsche) vs. owning a fast econo-box where you see them all the time.

Get. The. Porsche.

I miss my 986S every day, but it wasn't realistic down my gravel road/driveway. If its your dream, just do it. You only live once.

Theres a Peridot Green Cayman R in my future. Once this property is paid off, I'm off to a paved road and cash flow this one to make the payments (and then some)

Cheers. Get the car.

Tad,
Was it not realistic just because of the gravel or not realistic being your only car? I think the OP is gonna use it as his only vehicle.
Honestly, I'd like to know also. Having a Porsche is a dream of mine that could come true if I sold my STi and kept her as my only DD.

The gravel was definitely the issue. Its a tightly sprung car and the washboard we get up here is better suited to rally cars and 4x4s. I will be back in a Porsche DD as soon as I have pavement. (Tried to get the neighbors to split the cost; 7/16 said yes.

The crazy thing is that most owners, with regular maintenance, say that they don't break. Guess thats why its not uncommon to see quite a few still driving with over 200k.

Had a 996 C2 after I sold my STi. Miss it every day I drive the Supra I got after it.

I agree. Get the Porsche.

Any movement OP? Just curious ... I put my STi up for sale when I found a good deal on a 964. However, someone snatched it up before I could sell my STi.

i dunno why anyone would want a narrow body 911.

that and the costs of maintaining an older porsche are pretty high...check out the porsche thread in OT.
