Your poor fuel pump. Of course it's probably been replaced already with that many miles!

Why would you drive your car to the point of this?

Wow 226,293 miles! Have you done any major repairs over the life of this vehicle?

What's up with the temp gauge? Was the car off when you took the pic?

People usually shut their cars off at gas pumps.

Click and Clack would tell you that running a car empty (especially an older car) is not a healthy recipe for your fuel pump or fuel filter. It sucks (dirt).

Personally, I keep it above 1/4 tank because it costs you the same in gas (well, minimally more because you are carrying more fuel so less MPG's) but it is healthier for the tank, pump, filter, etc.

But no, never ran mine that low for any car I've owned, even when I was scraping up change in college to buy gas (good thing gas back then was less than $1.50/gallon).

^^^ yeah i know its bad. its not like i do this on a regular basis. at least replacing the fuel pump and fuel filter on a 02 wrx is super easy anyway.

I think my car is 16.9 gallons listed, but even the days when I think I might run out, I don't think I'be put in anything over like 15.5. So it's either less than 16.9, or my low fuell light comes on like 150 miles to go, because I've done close to 75 with the light on.
