Default Are JDM EJ20s really as unreliable as people are saying?

i have been doing research on JDM swaps into GC8s. a lot of what i have read has had to do with bearing fail, and unreliability.

i have been looking at getting a version 5 JDM WRX clip, not an STI. i have a 2000 OBS and im looking to do a major swap (engine, Drive train, brakes, interior and exterior parts). my thought is that if i get a clip that looks decent and has low miles, and is not an sti, hopefully it will have been treated well. im looking for a daily driver with around 300hp. a 2000 jdm wrx will get me pretty close to that. not to mention all the body parts.

im not trying to go crazy, just nice reliable fun! if i need to rebuild it before install i will do that.

thoughts???

Doesnt matter if u get wrx or sti they both would of been driven the same... and I dont think there unreliable, some people just driven em to ****, dont treat em good so they go boom. Use right fuel, right oil, get a tune and itll be a fast ass reliable car.

I have a 2001 ej205 w/AVCS and 20g that I've driven daily for a year and have had no problems. Like polaks said it's all about the right tune.

However if you are referring to a JDM MY01 EJ205 that was the first year of the Bugeye body style. Those engines are a huge improvement over the older Classic WRX EJ20G and STi EJ20K.

If reliable is want you want get USDM swap. If you want to go fast and tinker, get a usdm swap. If you want to beat the pants off the guy with the USDM swap get EJ20k or EJ207. just my 2 cents.

Its not that they are unreliable, its that people buy 15+ year old engines and beat the hell out of them without proper fuel octane rating, modded and untuned, and without proper maintenance.

Its a setup for disaster. Newer USDM engine will do the same except it may take a little longer.
