Question 1st subaru

I recently bought a non running 1999 2.5rs 2 door coupe. I pulled out the ej253 and tore it down. The engine has 4 spun rod bearings. I have several different options. I could rebuild with crank and rods, I could get the crank machined, or I could swap out the engine. I have a $1500 budget for this, I could rebuild or swap it for less than the cost of a reman. I would like to know if it is possible to run a jdm ej254 na dohc with my ej253 intake manifold, fuel system, and ecu. I'm sure that I could get the ej254 block and rotating assembly to work if I used my ej253 heads and intake because I dont think the computer would noticed any difference as long as I am running all of the usdm sensors. If it is at all possible I would like to use the dohc heads, i just dont know if my ecu will work with a jdm ej254 cam sensor, crank sensor. I dont know if my usdm cam and crank sensor will work with dohc. I was mainly wanting to know about these swaps because If I rebuild this engine then It will cost a lot more because I would use good internals for reliablity. The jdm engine was only $750 on ebay, about the same price as an sti crank shaft. Can somebody tell me if i can run that jdm ej254 with an intake manifold swap? Do I have any other options in my price range?

My guess is that if all 4 rods bearings were spun, it was run for quite a while with spun bearings so chance are that the crankshaft won't be salvageable with machining the crankshaft, same thing for rods probably.

And all the movement created by these spun bearings might have done some damage to the block and pistons. Also because of the metal shards of these old bearings that might be trap in these you should try to change the oil cooler and oil pump. And also should try to change the timing belt since it a good oportuniti for that.

Also for the ej253 ej254 hybrid I can't really say but you still would have to change the oil pump and oil cooler and timing belt and buy headgasket and other things. But if this work you might be looking at near 1500$, if your heads are alright.

So all in all I think that if you want to make that car run and stay near of your budget you should just do a complete engine swap for a used ej253 or if your willing to change your ecu do maybe some wiring you could go for something else.

Lastly if I were you and the car was in nice condition overall (no rust, etc..) I would just put a tarp over it and wait till I have enough $$$ to do some usdm sti or wrx swap with trans, or just take the car the dump and just forget about it.

Anyway, welcome to the forum and good luck with this project.
