05 WRX sedan. Bought it with 17x? Konig zeros with beat all seasons. Plan on putting snows on the konigs and getting a summer set up. I plan on running 245/40/17 and can't decide between 8 or 9" wheel. Heart wants 9" but head says 8" is cheaper and more versatile (can step down to 225 later if I want).

Car is primarily city (Omaha, NE) DD/family hauler + auto-x @ Nationals site several times per year. Stock suspension for now, will upgrade sways in summer (24f,22r).

Ran 205/50/15 star specs on 15x7 slipstreams on my neon and really liked that set up. Not sure how long the star specs would last with the heavier WRX? Was thinking about the dunlop maxx tt for a little more durability. The 235/40 595rsr sound very tempting as well, especially for the $$$.

For wheels, considering rota boost, grids, or g-force, or mach v awesomes. RPF1 are a possibility, but prefer the look of the rotas. Can't find fn01rcs

Want to stay around $1000 or less for wheels. Tires, I would like to stay under 160 each but will pay more if it is worth it. i need to get at least 2 seasons out of them (15k miles + and 12-14 auto-x).

Thanks

maybe if you want to be herrafrush.

for a 235 go 8"
for a 245 id go 9"

but with 9" 255 will have less stretch and be more square. i had 245s on a 8" and it bulged a bit. the same 245s on a 9" went to a bit stretch.

OMGUDIDNTSPECIFYWHICH595sUWERETALKINGABOUTITSTHEEN DOFTHEWORLD!!!!!

but actually its a slight stretch. granted, the 595rsr's are wider than most, they arent 2 sizes wider. closer to a 245 IMO.

this is a 235/40/17 595rsr on a 9" wheel.

slight stretch, i wouldnt quite call it square. looks the same as my 245/40/17 Conti DW on a 17x9" (except i have a bit more sidewall)

THIS is square on a 9" wheel: 255/40/17 (or 245 if youre talking about a tire that will run wide)

you quote a picture where you can't even see the shoulder of the tire.

No herrafrush here...just wanna stuff something wider than 225s without going crazy. 8" it is. Not a whole lot to choose from in 235/40/17 that is why I was leaning toward 245s

Thanks

I have 255/50r17 hankook ventus v12s on 8 in wheels and they only bulge a little bit. No way that federals run wide enough for a 235 to be square on a 9 inch wheel.

To be clear none of the 3 pictures above are square. So if that's what you call square sure bit your wrong plain and simple. There's a reason tire manufacturers recommend wheel widths and 235s on a 9 inch wide wheel is just wrong.

A round shoulder does not mean the tire is stretched.

If you think that isn't square, you need your eyes checked.

You're ALSO going off of wheel width and not the tires section width. Not all 235's are created equal, that's what you fail to grasp.

I'm fully aware of section width. Square is when the section width/tread width is the same as the wheel width. When the tire tread is visibly narrower then the wheel and the sidewall doesn't extend past the edge of the wheel at all that's a stretched tire.

I will admit I'm biased because I always run on the wider then recommended category as do many of the autoxing people that I've talked with. The entire stretched tire trend seems completely retarded to me. When Honda guys are running 10.5 inch wide r comps on their stock 6.5 wide wheels it amazes me the guys that want to run stock size tires on wheels that are 1-1.5 inches wider then stock

235/40/17 59t section width is 246mm or 9.7 inches. Seriously. Just stop.

And autocross guys run tires wayyyy to big for their wheels which is just as retarded as stretching.

Whatever you say captain there's no point arguing. everyone modding cars for the past hundred years or so have always ran tires as wide as they can squeeze onto the wheels I'm sure the last 2 years of VW owners know what's best. Heavier, wider wheels with the same amount of rubber on the ground sounds like a great plan. I'm sure people competing at a national level at autox and track racing also don't know what they're talking about and we should all be running 195/40s on 10 inch wide 20s cuz some people think that's cool too

Noone is saying that at all. Not even close.

And people running the fastest subarus in the country are not running "the widest possible tires they can fit on the wheels". Pinching tires (or running tires too large for the wheels) results in a decrease in turn-in response and a sloppy sidewall. for autocross....sure that works, but not for track racing.

You really don't understand what you're talking about. You're judging a tire based on its advertised size, and when presented with facts and a logical rebuttal to your position you really had nothing to say haha.

If I may, us autocross guys running wider tires on skinny wheels is because certain classes have limitations on wheel width. We fully admit that running wider than recommended tires on skinny wheels isn't as ideal as running an appropriate sized wheel for a given tire width. We just have to work with the rules we're given and in many cases the wider rubber on the skinny wheel still produces better lap times than using the recommended, skinnier tire width.

Keep in mind that most of us who are pinching wide tires on skinny wheels are doing it with R-compounds and NOT street tires. R-compounds have stiffer side walls and can handle being pinched much better. For my daily driven tires, I always run the manufacturer recommended wheel width.

As an example, I run 245/40 r-comps on 7" wide wheels because that is the wheel width limit for my car in my class. If I could run 8" or 9" wheels for my 245s, I definitely would.

an idiot...yer an idiot

plain
pure
and
simple

oh yeah.....i have been using uhp and MAX performance tires since i put the BFG TA 60H's on my 81 celica in 1983

so i know a bit more than the average vw idiots out there, too

and there have been a metric assload of cars wrecked on the street, driven by idiots who thought that what worked best for autox was best for the street
THAT is one of the biggest wives tales of the moment
