Narrowest tire on RS wheels?
Hey all. Just wanting to find out what the narrowest snow tire size everyone would feel comfortable putting on a set of 1999 RS wheels I just picked up to put over my 4-pot?. Just looking to get the most pounds per inch^2 to get down to the road.
Cheers

If you are using snows on a subie, you'll get down the road JUST fine, regardless of tire width...
Go with a "normal" width |

Thanks for the input, I've owned subies for nearly 20 years now and can vouch for their snow capability. But I am still interested in going thin. Anyone?

Ah internet forums. Lots of trolls. Minimal help. Maximal ego.
Back to the original question...anyone running 195's or more narrow? Would love some firsthand accounts by experienced and educated posters. The idea of getting a really heavy contact patch seems like it would be fun to try out for a winter. |

Don't throw out terms or numbers without some link to back up data. The load index of modern sidewalls will not be an issue on a 3000lb car. Even the lowest of low index numbers on respectable winter tires is well over 1000lbs per wheel.
Again looking for educating posters please. Last edited by DaveyPetey; 11-18-2012 at 08:54 PM. Reason: Grammar |

you can get a dunlop Graspic DS-3 in 175/60/16 which will fit.
you can also get a blizzak ws70 in a 185/55/16 i think. If you like to slide around and have fun I wouldn't run those sizes on a 7" wide wheel. Stretching a tire makes it extremely easy to pop it off the bead. And honestly, both of those choices would not be at the top of my list. I would much rather use a proper fitment general arctic altimax, nokian hakka, hankook i-pike, kumho kw19... If you're dead set of a narrower tire, get the yokohama ig20 in a 195/55/16. That's a good compromise and an awesome tire... or better yet, get some 'rally spec' 15" wheels that fit over 4 pots and run a narrow tire that actually fits properly. |

It doesn't look like there's much selection in narrower sizes, anyway. |

Thanks Zefy and Patrick. After reading the articles on Tirerack, C&D, etc...on the advantages of more narrow tires it got me interested if anyone actually did this with their winter setup. Obviously stretching is gonna be a horrible idea, I'm just looking to find out what size will increase my lb/ft^2 a bit without sacrificing sidewall mechanics. I'm leaning towards the Blizzaks in 195/60/16. About half an inch more narrow than original OEM, minimal change in diameter, and more than an inch less than my 225/45/17 summer set-up. Some rough math is spitting out about 13% reduction in contact patch, which I would think translate into much better snowy/icy road traction. I can't imagine I'm the first one to do this, but I'll definitely post on the results if any are really discernible.

Oh and so any data supported thoughts on 195's on those 16x7's?

195's are on!!!! Just for completeness sake I'll get some pics up tomorrow. The contact patch is even smaller than I anticipated. I didn't realize how loud my star specs were after driving on these Blizzaks. Pretty excited about getting them onto some ice to see how it works out.
