Default WRX speaker question!

So front speakers on my 2003 WRX are slowly going out and needing to be replaced. Am sorta on a budget so didn't want to go aftermarket but was just curious if anybody knew if other subaru OEM speakers such as from the STI,forester, legasy ect OEM speakers could plug and play with that of the buugeye's. any help would be appreciated.

Thanks, Cody

a good not great set of aftermarket speakers can be had for ~$50 just saying... other wise, for sure all imprezas 1993-2007 have the same size front speakers, really all subarus ive ever taken door panels off that I can remember have 6.5" speakers... but they're all crap.

any 6.5" speaker will work, there is a harness, but its easy enough to transfer over to the new speakers.

Are 03 imprezas 6.5" speaker size? Don't quote me on it but thought it was 5.25" front and 4" rear. Also that 6.5" is possible but would need a spacer.

only needs a spacer if it is deep. 4" in rear is correct.

I put a pair of polk speakers up front (5 1/4"s iirc)
they were like $50-60 at best(worst) buy but I had a gift card.

They are decent enough, BIG improvement over the stockers which sounded like a can with a string attached to it.

I took the old speaker assembly apart and used that as the mount/spacer (the speaker is part of the whole piece but is easily removed)

How did the old speaker assembly work as a spacer for your speakers?

This is how I did mine. I used the stock speaker as a spacer. I took the cone off and using a dremel, cut out the basket and mounted the new kicker component woofer in the frame of the old speaker, then mounted it in the door. Heres some pics.
Here's the basket after I cut the basket off

Here's the piece of the frame that I cut out and marked for new holes

Here's a side shot of the new speaker

Here's a shot of the new speaker with the old frame in place

And here is a shot of the component set installed The crossover is mounted on the inside of the door below the window motor.

Hope this helps others, as it was a longshot when I cut the perfectly fine old speaker apart and tried this. I don't know how much clearance I have, but without the spacer, I needed about 3/8" and that is about how thick the spacer is, so I know it's not got much clearance.

Fronts are 6.5" and rears are 4" but you can upgrade to 5.25" with an adapter.

You need an adapter for the front as well. I would not hack up a stock speaker (even a blown one) and cobble together an adapter, but that is just me. Hence why I made proper adapters...

Awesome thanks for the write up Eric, they look like they turned out great. But where would you get adapters for the speakers? And your saying with them you can run the 6.5" up front and 5.25" in the rear?
